Time was that DC sued Fawcett OVER Captain Marvel/Shazam (claiming it was a ripoff of Superman). Decades later the companies merged.

No, they never merged. Fawcett gave up the suit when Superhero titles were dropping in popularity. Fawcett stayed in the comics business well into the '70s with numerous "Dennis the Menace" titles. Because Fawcett gave up, Marvel comics took the opportunity to buy the rights to the name Captain Marvel, though numerous others used the famous name for their own characters over the years. DC bought the old stories from Fawcett but didn't have rights to the name, except as it applied to the character already in the stories. You could have stories with a character NAMED Captain Marvel, but you couldn't have a comic book by the same name. A mess.

Eventually, DC phased out the Captain Marvel name and went with "Shazam", the magic word and the name of the Wizard who gave Captain Marvel his powers.

In my opinion, DC's original suit against Captain Marvel was without merit. Yes, Fawcett explicitly wanted to do a Superman knock-off, but the resulting character was a completely different superhero.

DC ripped off Captain Marvel as much as Captain Marvel ripped-off Superman.

Captain Marvel was flying while Superman was still hopping around. There never was a remotely plausible explanation for Superman flying.

The original bald headed scientific genius was Dr. Sivana. In fact, Lex Luther had a full-head at first until he went full-Dr. Sivana later.

Boy version (Captain Marvel Jr.) and girls version (Mary Marvel) predate Superboy and Supergirl more than a decade earlier.

Captain Marvel could travel through time with the Rock of Eternity long before Superman figured out the same trick.

Heck, it took until the '70s, but Clark Kent eventually mimicked Billy Batson by going into television under Morgan Edge at WGBS (why Clark Kent and Peter Parker never threatened to shop their work at the cross-town rival always puzzled me).
