GEORGE FRIEDMAN: A US Attack On North Korea Is Imminent
Business Insider/Mauldin Economics ^ | 5-23-2017

The US is preparing to attack North Korea, according to Geopolitical Futures founder George Friedman—setting the stage for a difficult, messy war with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Speaking Monday to a rapt audience at the 2017 Strategic Investment Conference in Orlando, Friedman said that while it is unlikely the US will take action before President Trump returns home at the weekend, North Korea’s actions appear to have “offered the US no alternative” to a clash.

According to Geopolitical Futures analysis, evidence is mounting that the enmity between the two is escalating to a point where war is inevitable.

Friedman revealed that on May 20, the USS Carl Vinson supercarrier and USS Ronald Reagan were both within striking distance of North Korea.

Additionally, more than 100 F16 aircraft are conducting daily exercises in the area, a tactic which foreshadowed the beginning of Desert Storm in 1991.

F35 aircraft have also been deployed to the area, and US government representatives will be briefing Guam on civil defense, terrorism, and Korea on May 31.

All of these strategic moves telegraph one outcome—conflict.

Some peoples minds work this way.

DJT goes out of town so the leakers can get flushed out.

The leakers MUST go before he can make a little war.

I certainly don’t want war, but if it’s war they want, then war shall they get - so long as we get rid of the stupid rules of engagement that have handcuffed our military since the Vietnam conflict.

One month ago, I would have easily believed this, now, it may just be Saber Rattling, American Style. Most presidents have engaged in such behavior during their tenure.

Trump proved that he could keep a secret when he dropped that bomb on Syria a few months ago. It shocked everybody, because for once, he kept his mouth shut and did not publicly telegraph an actual intention. He didn’t even Tweet! I hope to see more of that President Trump.

I can’t imagine they would attempt anything like this unless China was on board. I wonder what they would have to promise China for its acquiescence.

South Korea would have to provide the on-the-ground muscle. Are they ready to take this on? And this would have to be real shock-and-awe blitzkrieg warfare, because otherwise Seoul is right in the cross-hairs.

This all seems far-fetched to me. More likely they start to apply pressure and some previously no-name general mounts a coup.

We can’t let them get solid rocket boosters. Has anyone else noted since the X37-B returned, they have getting off successful launches.

He's a Sebastian Gorka type. War College, RAND Corporation, National Defense University lecturer and all that. Founded Stratfor.

South Korea is less worried about the war than it is about the aftermath. Integrating East Germany set Germany back about a decade economically because of the disparity between the two regions.

The difference between DPRK and ROK is greater by an order of magnitude. You’d need to have a twenty-year transition with civic education and internal passports before you could even allow north koreans to vote in korean elections.

The DMZ would remain up as a control against internal migration.

I think everyone’s preferred outcome is a coup in DPRK that results in a gradual transition.

Trump’s pressure on China will resolve this issue. In the final analysis, NK is a chattel state of China, whether Kim acknowledges it or not. If the US is forced to resolve the issue NK will be lost to China. It is in China’s most vital interest to bring NK to heel.

Imho, fighting a land war in Korea during the winter is a bad idea.

Difficult and messy? I bet if you pull in with truckloads of food they’ll be surrendering in waves.

"Imho, fighting a land war in Korea during the winter is a bad idea."

The Battle Of Chosin Reservoir is just one example why you are correct.

Don’t underestimate fat boy!

Operation Millennium Challenge showed what 1950’s technology could do to us in a full blown war. We didn’t win FWIW.

“If you pull in with truckloads of food... They would surrender”

Dominos pizza could win the war in 30 minutes or less or your next war is free.

If it must be so, shock and awe, up to and including a full-scale nuclear attack. Loony Kim has been given every opportunity to avoid that, but isn’t interested.
