Churches, synagogues openly defy Trump’s immigration crackdown (Irish and Italians slandered)
60 Minutes (CBS News Scott Pelley) ^ | 05/21/2017 | Scott Pelley

Since President Trump took office, according to ICE, about 11,000 undocumented people with no criminal records have been detained -- twice as many as last year. Now, the number of religious institutions across the country offering sanctuary has doubled to more than 800.

--SNIP---

Jim Kenney: Well, you know, Ellis Island had opened in 1892. The bulk of Irish Diaspora came to America in the 1840s. We didn't have papers either. We were undocumented. There was an anti-Italian slur, when I was growing up in my neighborhood called W-O-P—that's without papers.

I got stuck at the in-laws and had to watch this garbage from Pelley. They interviewed one of the biggest leftist buffoons of our time, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

Kenney lied and slandered millions of Americans of Italian heritage. The "WOP" slur does not mean "Without Papers". It derived from the Southern Italian dialect term guappo, meaning swaggerer. It is not a nice term but to see it hijacked for political purposes is disgusting.
Kenney also lied by trying to compare legal Italian and Irish immigrants from Europe with the current wave of illegal invaders.

Watch this last night. Pelley is full of crap and so was the mayor of Philadelphia.

In 1840, the US needed workers. There was more work in the new country than there were workers.

We just don’t need foreign laborers anymore.

Weren't many members of Italian organized crime illegal aliens?

I seem to remember quite a few of them being deported.

Ok. Now I agree that such sanctuary houses of worship should lose their tax-exempt status.

This isn’t the 1800’s anymore. We are not a big empty country.
Every other country has and enforces immigration laws.
We should too.

Not only that, but the huge immigration wave had an end. I believe the bulk was within a 20-year period, then assimilation began in earnest. So, any left-wing nutbag who wants to make a comparison is free to answer the question "When does the current wave come to an end? How many is enough?"

Charles “Lucky” Luciano was deported but I think most of them were US grown or had to get processed through Ellis Island. Maybe some of our FRiends will know more.

When one of my French ancestors came to America in 1774, he had to have “papers” and someone in the Colonies to sponsor him or would not have been allowed to come here. I have photo copies of all the paper work from 1774.

It is pretty disgusting that they have to insult your family to cover for their own illegal activities.

Bout fell out of my chair when I heard that. Growing up in the 60's it was common in the neighborhoods. Turned the channel to watch the paintpealing channel.

1980 The Refugee Act defines refugees as a person who flees his or her country “on account of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.“ Refugees are considered a different category than immigrants. The president and Congress are granted the authority to establish an annual ceiling on the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. The act also lowers the annual limit of immigrants to 270,000, from 290,000......................... 1986 The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) allows immigrants who had entered the U.S. before Jan. 1, 1982, to apply for legal status but required them to pay fines, fees, and back taxes. It also gives the same rights to immigrants who worked in agricultural jobs for 90 days before May 1982. About 3 million immigrants gained legal status through the law. The act also requires employers to verify work status of all new hires and fine those who hire undocumented workers.................. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In the 19th century, legal immigration consisted of making it here and not having an obvious disease. But as Progressives love to tell us, situations change and laws have to adapt. In this case it works against them.

Exactly. And back then *everybody* understood that if you came here you either worked your a$$ off,had family who was willing to support you or you starved.Under those rules "open immigration" worked pretty well in the end.My Dad and his siblings, the children of Irish immigrants, told hundreds of stories of working their a$$ses off trying to get out of South Boston 100 years ago.Back then blacks hadn't made it to Boston yet and the Irish were the niggaz of Boston.

But every one of them made it to the middle class suburbs of Boston. In fact my father's boss,an industrialist and scientist who appeared on the cover of Time three times, attended my mother's funeral.

That's what can come of hard work.Or at least what could come of it once upon a time.
