China unveiled an indigenously developed attack helicopter on Thursday as it eyes a lucrative export market and ramps up an ambitious modernisation programme.

The Z-19E, developed by the state-owned AVIC Harbin Aircraft Industry, took to the skies over the city of Harbin for its maiden flight, with images carried on state television.

Based on the Z-19’s design, the Z-19E, also called the “Black Whirlwind” can be used in quick-response, low-impact and frequent attack missions, the China National Radio reported.

“The helicopter is the latest narrow-body tandem-seat armed helicopter. It is also the country’s first export-oriented helicopter made especially for attack purposes,” state news agency Xinhua said.

Deputy chief designer Li Shengwei said the helicopter is equipped with safety features to improve the pilot’s survival rate.

“The Z-19E and Z-9 are similar in many respects,” Li said.

In terms of manoeuvrability and functions, the Z-19E meets international standards and its operating interface is in English, he said.

“The Z-19E has strong market potential as some of its components are compatible with other countries’ military systems,” Song Zhongping, a military expert who served in the PLA Rocket Force, told the state-run Global Times.

Song also noted that the helicopter would fare well in the global market.

It is aimed at countries which require light military helicopters with medium-level attack power, he said.

China has rolled out a series of increasingly advanced equipment in recent years, including stealth fighter jets and the first domestically developed aircraft carrier.

China has also increasingly been focused at getting more defence orders on the world market, trying to shed a reputation for poor reliability or cloning weapons.

It should also be pointed out that this is not for domestic Chinese use - the Z-19E is the *export* model, to be sold on the world arms market. Hence the interfaces in English, etc.

Thanks, free traitors. Yet another foreign weapon system you conned us into paying for.

In 1966, I was “lucky” enough to spiral in in a goonie. Kinda walked away from it, as fast as I could. Let’s face it, there is no way to protect troops on a military helicopter. If it is going down, the pilot has a really limited amount of things to do, basically kind of throw it in a direction and hope it’s soft. This theory is a lot like bull riding. You are going to hit the ground, hopefully not on something on your person that will break.

The EuroCopter Tiger and some Russian helicopters have an additional option other than “ride it in” - they have working ejector seats, where the rotor gets blown away from the chopper then the pilot’s ejector seat throws them clear.

The EuroCopter Tiger ejection seats are designed to blow out sideways and down to stay away from the prop. The two Russian choppers that eject do the same but they blow the prop away at the same time the seats go sideways. In a fighter aircraft, they are designed to go up. Not sure if I, or many pilots, would want to use it. Depending upon how much control they have of the aircraft will determine if the ground is coming up at them or they will be firing the egress sideways at it.

Hmm. I would have guessed the bottom or sides would be blown off and the seats kicked out that way. Pray those rotors come off!

I’m not sure about the Tiger, but the Russian Kamovs with ejector seats blow the rotor disc off and then the canopy, then fire the fighter style ejection seats.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamov_Ka-50

“For improved pilot survivability the Ka-50 is fitted with a NPP Zvezda (transl. Star) K-37-800 ejection seat, which is a rare feature for a helicopter.[21] Before the rocket in the ejection seat deploys, the rotor blades are blown away by explosive charges in the rotor disc and the canopy is jettisoned.[22]”

http://www.ejectionsite.com/k37seat.htm

The Mi-28 is the Russian chopper that drops the hapless crewman to the side and down. It’s not a true ejection seat, more like a bail-out chute where it dumps the seat and occupant out. You have to have significant altitude to use it safely while the Kamov system is a true zero-zero system.

Back in the US, the Sikorsky S-72 research and development mule had ejection seats that worked much like the Ka-50 and 52’s, so you can see how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLhZN7fTwQQ

Unrelated: Some of the Russian guys are really, really good at doing extremely close air support at speed in a really big helicopter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv3iHs8_2GY

I was stationed at Beale AFB in the late 70’s to mid 80’s and was around when an aircraft lost avionics on take off and when it started to turn over less than 100 feet off the ground, the pilots ended up ejecting sideways. Still in the seat they both bounced a few times and then after clearing the seat they ran like the wind away from the craft. If they had shot up rather than sideways, they would have stood a better chance of a safe egress. They were terribly lucky.

If an aircraft is designed to egress sideways and down, then altitude and angle become a very important topic. The act of egreesing up with a prop in the way becomes a real crap shoot. And with very little control of a chopper going down, which includes the twisting of the body as they don’t always go straight down, disappearing sideways and down becomes a matter of not firing yourself into the ground, a tree, a mountain, or any solid substance that can reek a variety of damage to the body.

It’s fortunate for the Russian pilots that the Ka-50 and -52 has vertical ejection, then. :P

Go look for yourself. The Kamov is a vertical ejector - blows the rotor disc, waits a second, blows the canopy and then ejects the crew.

Sorry. I meant it as they figured out to get the rotor away from the scene prior to the crew expelling. This is a good thing as sending them through the blade would be a real special effect for a slasher movie.

Kind of like the film they didn’t show for the death of actor Vic Morrow. The helicopter being used for the scene was hovering at about 24 feet above him when pyrotechnic explosions damaged it and caused it to crash on top of him, killing him instantly. Morrow was decapitated by the helicopter rotor.

They even have a utube of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jHwEc0USS4

It is graphic but the actual strike was either taken out of the film or just wasn’t seen due to the pyrotechnics. It still is a little graphic.
