CANNES, France (AP) -- Clint Eastwood regaled the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday with stories from his long career, predicted a possible return to acting and decried the rise of political correctness.

Eastwood was honored with several screenings of his films, including one marking the 25th anniversary of "Unforgiven." In a staged conversation on Sunday, the 86-year-old director said he would revisit acting "someday."

The last time Eastwood appeared on screen was 2012's "Trouble With the Curve." Before that, he starred in his own 2008 film, "Gran Torino."

Eastwood didn't talk about current political events, but while discussing his then-controversial 1971 film "Dirty Harry," he waded into a topic he's touched on before: so-called political correctness.

"A lot of people thought it was politically incorrect," Eastwood said of "Dirty Harry." ''That was at the beginning of the era that we're in now, where everybody thinks everyone's politically correct. We're killing ourselves by doing that. We've lost our sense of humor."

His quality has not suffered as he has aged, he just keeps getting better. He is one of the few actors that has transcended his typecast and kept himself relevant his entire career. Unforgiven is one of my favorite movies.

On a movie set at any instant you’re paying high wages to TONS of people.

Even if you SIT doing nothing, you’re paying a fortune.

One day on the set near Chico Eastwood caught sight of a young local boy with his grandfather. They were watching the dynamics of the set as simple onlookers:

One of the lenses of the boy’s glasses featured a HUGE crack.

Eastwood saw it and stopped everything, talking to the grandpa:

“I hate it but his mom’s in jail and his dad isn’t the most reliable type...I’m on a fixed income...” he was sad, saying it.

Eastwood sent a criticall LIGHT GUY to take the pair to the local pharmacy for a couple hours to replace the cracked lense.

The pair were never aware the glasses might well have cost Eastwood $50k.

THAT is how he is.

Should have an empty suit draped over the empty chair. More meaningful and truthful.

............hell, I remember sitting down and watching “Rowdy” at supper when it was on. Black and white. No remote. 6’ 5” Dad would give you “the look” if you interrupted “his” show. Or, reached for seconds before he did!

He was also just complaining that political correctness is ruining the movies. But this points to a solution.

The problems are that studios don’t want to hire older actors and especially actresses. And they are sterilizing movies for content to make them bland and inoffensive.

So Clint Eastwood needs to do what Mel Gibson did in the making of The Passion of the Christ - take the movie out of the studios as an indy, and get a distribution deal from Lionsgate.

This means the vast majority of the cast can be seniors, he can get the best screenplay without censorship or additions, he can do whatever location shoots he wants, he is in total control of his budget and timetable, and his actors can be free to improv if they are good at it.

And he could put in lots of elements that would horrify both the studios and the p.c. crowd. For example, inserting conservative politics as well as criticisms of leftist politics, and be complementary to some religions and not so to others.

It will likely be the last movie many of his cast will be in, so it will be a final chance to be remembered for a great performance in a great movie.
