Exactly right. People tend to forget how many mainstream media reporters were fired for literally making up stories in recent years. Here's a link to a 2012 piece about 10 "journos" caught fabricating quotes and stories. That's just one reference. There are many others. I'd wager the vast majority, if not all stories pinned to "anonymous sources" are made up.
