Texas Southern University cancels Cornyn speech in response to student petition

Concerns about an ugly student confrontation prompted Texas Southern University in Houston to cancel a scheduled commencement address Saturday by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate.

The decision at the historically black college comes amid a student petition demanding that Cornyn be blocked from speaking and urging that all graduating students and their families "express their discontent" if he does. By Friday, 863 people had signed the petition on change.org, an online activist petition network.

The school's decision comes amid a growing national debate about free speech on college campuses, following increasingly frequent student protests and several high-profile cancellations, mostly directed at conservative speakers.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was booed at a commencement address this week at Bethune-Cookman University, a black college in Daytona Beach, Florida. It also comes weeks after protests led a student group at the University of California at Berkeley to pull the plug on a speech by conservative commentator Ann Coulter. That decision followed clashes over President Donald Trump, and the cancellation of an appearance by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopouloswas amid destructive student disturbances.

DeVos, amid heckling, boos, and gown-clad graduates turning their backs, could be seen on news footage Wednesday appealing for respectful dissent. "Let's choose to hear each other out," she said.

Cornyn aides said the decision to cancel his appearance was the school's, not his. "Sen. Cornyn was honored to be invited to address TSU's graduates, but he respects the administration's decision and looks forward to continuing to engage with the University in the future," said a Cornyn spokesman.

The written response to any invite to speak at any college should be,

“Thank you for your generous offer, but as students at your institution have learned to shut down any speech that varies from leftist orthodoxy, please GFY. Thanks, and have a nice day!”

Commencement is set up by the school, not the students. The students can ask for certain things, far enough in advance to be determined in the best interest of the facility and the students in their opinion. but it the schools responsibility to the current, and future student body, to decide what will be allowed on the land.

Cancel all commencement activities and mail them their diplomas. If they were looking forward to the joy of the celebration, they just told the college to save the money for the activities the school is paying for so they can use it for stamps.

The students need to learn that life doesn’t happen just for you and what you want. Life is give and take. And if you do something that is inconsistent with society or tradition, then you must be prepared to handle the yang.

How about a petition demanding TSU refuse to admit Nazis and other subversives into your school? Will you cave to this too?

Well said (and just what I was thinking, too).

Bob Dole was the commencement speaker at my daughter’s college graduation. This was 1993 and yes there were protests but it amounted to students wearing a pineapple on their cap with a slash through it. Times have changed.

I say put together a board with rules that universities must abide by and let the universities bring thier curriculum before the board to request funding.

How long do you think it will be before the rules prohibit any kind of "hate speech" and mandate diversity?

I say: in a free society, not one penny of public funding ought to go towards education.

More proof that terrorism, even just the threat of terrorism, works. Especially against men of no courage.

We on the right better learn that lesson.

When will the 99% of all business owners who happen to be white sign a petition stating that they will not hire any graduate of a “historically black college or university?”

Truth29,

The attack upon students, starting in grammar schools, has reached a point of giving the opinion to students, and growing adults, they can call the shots in most cases. They believe they are entitled. This, as an adult in my sixties I know to be a totally incorrect happenstance that more experienced people learn.

This is one of the reasons our race as a whole is failing and turning to things through misleading and not thinking to areas that will destroy many on this planet. And I’m not talking about global warming.

More and more youth and older are turning to theories that kill or harm. These malcontents are insistent that they know the way and that those before them hadn’t weighed in things like birthing out of marriage, going to religious sects, and being okay to cheat on their income tax or beat their children or spouse within an inch of their lives, or worse. I’m a firm believer that there are so many lesbians in the US because there are so few real men to satisfy the women with masculinity. And as the women are being taught to become powerful rather than compromise, they are chasing men to each other the same.

The world is not the same as it was 100 years ago. And it seems a shame that we can do all these wonderful things like cure polio, walk on the moon, and send so much aid to countries that in many cases actually needed/earned it.

There’s a lot of evil out there. Wish it would stay out there and not be transferred by those that shouldn’t to those who don’t know any better or are taught how to tell the difference until after the pain arrives. Sad

They would probably prefer Quanell X, leader of the New Black Panther Party in Houston, Texas.

Too Funny, Why in the world would anyone on this site support a LEFT WING RINO line John Wayne McCornyn, who in his primary and general election claimed to be just like one of us. ?

Who knew that The Donald would consider a RINO, No. 2 in the Senate to be the next FBI Director??

You should support a straight talker like Quanell X - not someone who speaks with Forked Tongue like Cornyn

That's at least mildly amusing. Nowadays it's like a scene out of 1984 with the Two Minutes Hate.

That's less than 10%. How about at least twice as many sign one in favor. Then let's see what happens.
