Okay, thanks. It’s interesting. I’m trying to get a handle on how dogs really think or how their training makes them aware of things they and/or other dogs wouldn’t normally be aware of. I imagine that an ordinary dog left alone at home with a loaded handgun somehow left on the floor might think of it as a plaything, especially if the floor is slippery enough for the dog to bat the gun around like a hockey puck until it goes off, while another dog might “know” enough to leave it alone.
It was a legitimate question, and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.
My dogs have been rescues, and therefore required training, but even with my poor efforts, they became intensely loyal to me, and very, very protective. My latest, Penny, gets VERY protective when she sees anyone approach me with something that LOOKS like a weapon, a garden rake, and umbrella, a baseball bat, or even a nerf gun or water blaster. So I think they understand the concept of a “weapon”.
Police and military dogs undergo even more training, along with the loud noises and confusion of gunfire and explosions. Although they may not have a scientific understanding of ballistics, or knowledge of what “taking a bullet” can lead to, it is possible that combining the loyalty, protectiveness, sensing of danger, and the loudness and confusion of the situation, that they are very aware of the possibility that this could be their last mission. (In a doggie way, of course). Just my humble opinion.

I live 30 miles outside of Detroit and just last
week, a pack of pit bulls attacked a 5 year-old
girl. Two weeks before that, a couple was attacked
their own home by another pit bull that was owned
by the woman’s son who was not home at the time of
the attack. Supposedly, this dog was trained...
Trained for what, I have no idea!
I would bet, even a military dog wouldn’t “know” what a weapon on the ground actually is, unless it was trained to detect by smell. In the context of its routine of confronting bad guys, it would probably focus on a raised arm with a held weapon. A trained routine, not an active thiught.
