Trump Weighs Shake-Up of Press Team

President blames team for failing to contain Comey controversy, and hasn’t ruled out replacing Spicer

By Eli Stokols and Rebecca Ballhaus Updated May 12, 2017 7:13 p.m. ET 88 COMMENTS

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump is considering broad changes to his communications team and strategy, which he blames for failing to contain the controversy surrounding his firing of former FBI Director James Comey, according to multiple administration officials.

Among other moves, Mr. Trump is again weighing replacing Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who returned to the briefing room podium on Friday after two days away on Naval reserve duty. But the president is considering a larger reorganization of his team, a White House official said. Since Wednesday, a senior communications staffer has been reaching out to people from supportive cable TV surrogates to gauge their interest in joining the staff.

Additionally, in a taped interview set to air Saturday, Mr. Trump said he is considering abolishing the century-old practice of daily press briefings in favor of conducting his own briefing every two weeks, according to a preview released by Fox News. In that interview, the president called Mr. Spicer a “wonderful human being” but declined to answer a question about whether he would remain in his post.

What I would do is revoke the press pass of anyone asking completely asinine questions or making completely asinine comments.

Then don’t allow the organization that sent the person to replace them.

That should thin the herd rather quickly.

You are right, but it’s not because of speed.

Trump and Bannon, as I have suspected for some time, deliberately put cheese in the maze every morning for the douchenozzles in the press to chase. Then they go on about the business of fixing the country. These bits of cheese last at least a day, sometimes several, all leading to blind alleys because Trump already has seen the final scenes and knows how everything ends. He has the evidence, but he CANNOT share it with his press team. Much of it is classified.

He is 10 steps ahead of the fake news media, but also about 5 steps ahead of his media team. Probably cancelling things would be the best. Just issue a statement without questions, every day. Then sit down one on one with a reporter with HARD AND FAST RULES about etiquette, NO INTERRUPTIONS.

I've been watching the daily briefings for months, and Spicer does a fine job and is loyal to his boss.

As for the press, these ankle-biting, arrogant bastards should not be allowed on White House property.

If I were Trump, I would eliminate daily briefings all together and tell the press to subscribe to the White House:Daily:

I like Spicer.

Trump should make the press conference must-see-TV.

Put up some BIG screens next to Spicer and have 2 aids for Spicer via Skype every day. They could glare at the press corp and spout hilarious but true quips...lol

Pick people that would enrage the MSM press corp.

Mike Cernovich, Dennis Miller, Rush, Roger Stone, Roseanne Barr, Stefan Molyneux, Paul Joseph Watson, James Woods, Scott Adams, Lionel-of Lionel Nation, Anne Coulter, Rush, our own Jim Robinson....lol

I know I would NEVER miss it...it would go on for hours every day and kill off regular afternoon TV fare...all eyes would be on the press conference spectacle.

After every question the entire panel breaks out in laughter then makes jokes about the reporter and how stupid and ugly he is then mocks him and his whack-job leftist dishonesty for about 5 minutes.

Okay, next question, over here...

I’d watch every day.

Spot ON! And, it’s just as simple as you say. Meanwhile, This looks like a shark feeding and can not be tolerated.

The media is killing us, and allowing them to do it on Live TV, in public, has got to stop.

I understand, and do believe that the Comey firing was held closely to the vest entirely to avoid leaks.

However, the WH press team didn’t have a clue. Sarah arrived on Morning Joe, on Wednesday morning, without a shred of information to offer, beyond what the world already knew— that Rosenstein presented a review and the president fired Comey.

Who does that? Why go on TV rounds for the POTUS to add nothing, beyond parroting Rosenstein’s fine resume and that “Rosenstein did it”. We knew that already.

Sarah is paid to know better. She should have stayed home, or issued a statement until she could offer a believable narrative on Trump’s thinking and how the storied event unfolded.

Later at the White House presser, she was still woefully unprepared and failed to offer to get back to the press pool with more later, with an update on the chronology of Trump’s lead-up to the Comey firing. Trump was left to mop up after her, Thursday and Friday.

She talked way too much, repeated the same lines over and over, trying to exonerate the boss, and got her head handed to her. It was embarrassing and put her on the way to looking like a toady.

Sean, thankfully, returned on Friday and was open and honest. I really like him. He actually “gets” the media.

Couldn’t agree with you more on the changes Trump suggested to Janine Pirro. Do away with the pressers, take control of the message and let Trump handle it every so often on his own.
