8,000 prison inmates in Colorado have been given computer tablets with the ability to call loved ones from the inside, play games, read books, and listen to music.
Until February, Andrew Stiern could only speak with his girlfriend on a phone in a prison day hall while 10 other inmates listened in and waited impatiently in line behind him, reported The Denver Post . Now the 29-year-old inmate can kick back in the limited privacy of his cell at Four Mile Correctional Center in Cañon City and call his girl on a new computer tablet anytime between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. He can also use the same device to listen to his favorite tunes from a streaming cache of 12 million songs, read books or play video games to his hearts content.
GTL Corps Inspire pilot program seeks to distribute tablets to over 18,000 prison inmates, and eventually to every prisoner in the United States, according to The Denver Post. It is reportedly designed to give inmates access to a wide range of media, including educational programming, but also creates a new revenue stream for GTL, which specializes in inmate telecommunications and payment systems.
Its great. Im kind of the tablet rep guy, said inmate Andrew Stiern to The Post. When you are in prison, you are cut off from the outside world. You want your mind to be focused on positive things. Its kind of an escape from this world. These tabs have become a new piece of life in here.
Though some believe that the tablets could help deflate friction between prison gangs over prison phone use, other correctional officers and victims group representatives are skeptical of the program.

When you are in prison, you are cut off from the outside world.”
Ummm, isn’t that the point of prison?
porn, drugs - what could go wrong?
Our tax dollars at work to make criminals comfortable -rewarding them for being criminals.
Colorado ping.
“Though some believe that the tablets could help deflate friction between prison gangs over prison phone use”
Now gang members will have improved coms. Outstanding!
I have no problem with this. Helping these souls to pass their time in something other than gang riots and buggery is a mercy.
They are already filing false tax returns.
Looks like the capitol of Colorado has been moved from Denver to Sacramento.
The mile “high” mountain air and cannabis-crowd seem to be running the penal system.
Years ago I thought of the future where inmates played online mmorpg game hosted by the prison system and designed remediate those that can be, but also identify those that can’t be.
I never thought of giving them access to the outside world. That’s a bad move.
compassion taken to excess
I agree. Keeps them off yard and out of trouble.
If we make prison nicer than life outside, the results should be predictable.
Democrats work really hard to make life better for
* prisoners
* unemployed
* illegals
* criminals (free and accused, not yet in prison)
* foreigners who want to bypass immigration lines (refugees, unskilled family members of illegals, etc)
Almost exclusively to make daily life better, not improve long term prospects of the individuals or city/state/country. They do give lip service to how their programs will improve lives in the long term, but the benefits (and $$$) come today with no metrics to measure long term effect (and usually no long term positive effect) and resistance to stopping programs that would be considered a failure if they provided metrics.
Democrats don’t anything (besides talk) for
* veterans
* workers
* small business owners
* foreigners who want to immigrate legally
It’s hard to believe Ds win any elections. (Until I look at what republicans actually do once elected)
Grand Theft Auto?
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Now we know where all that “pot money” is going.
If they are a perk for good behavior, I’m OK with this. If they are a new “right” then this stinks.
Nevermind, if the tablet is taken away for bad behavior, the offender will just take another one from a weaker inmate and use it to commit more crime. This just stinks.
It’ll also see them more easily communicate with their pals on the outside to coordinate retaliation against their victims.
Have a neighbor who’s in the business of receiving and selling stolen vehicles?
Work with law enforcement to bust them?
Expect your home to get burned to the ground by the inmate’s pals while you’re at work.
I would hope that communications would be very closely monitored, but somehow I doubt it.
” Helping these souls to pass their time in something other than gang riots and buggery is a mercy.”
Could be?
Very few details provided in the article.
Is EVERYTHING they do recorded and tracked?
Prisons phones are(used to be?) recorded and monitored.
This looks to be a for profit scheme.
Far better than good intentions...
Good idea give them pot and heroin and anything else their little heart desires. A true example of liberalism run amok.
