This pathetic display makes me think things are not going well for Putin behind the scenes, especially with oil well below $50 and falling further. He can’t have much longer.

I agree with you that the Russians are in trouble, financially speaking. Oil is THE key, as they STILL haven’t diversified their economy in the 25 years since the fall of Communism (plus having a bunch of kleptocrats in charge isn’t exactly helpful to overall economic progress).
I’m not sure that Putin will be leaving that soon. The Russian people have put up with a LOT worse many times in the past, and Putin is very good at stroking the Russian ego.
