Trump: US ‘Needs A Good Shutdown’

President Trump on Tuesday called for a "good shutdown" in September to fix the "mess” in government.

"The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We … either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!" he wrote in a series of tweets.

>a more certain bet would be to nix the filibuster

Which is the plan. The September set down is about forcing the TOP get rid of the filibuster. Once gone the GOP will be forced to give in to Trump.

“the CR even says there can be no future funding for the wall.”
“Not true.”

According to an Article in the American Thinker it is true.

Ever since the election, some have wrung their hands and cried “woe is me” at everything Trump has said...Then, in a couple of days, whatever Trump had said or done turns out to be correct...It has happened endlessly in here with many FReepers....

Why telegraph a shutdown? Why give the opposition time to prepare? Why not make it happen now?

Now we have to wait 5 months to see if DC treats us like Charlie Brown again.

I don’t see how anything will be different in Sept.
Why is it better to push the inevitable battle out till then?

What is gained?

I know what’s been lost: momentum, support from the base, and integrity.

This is a rancid PR loss and is very bitter to those who have supported this admin.

I see you’ve learned nothing from the travel ban fiasco. Shutting down the government now with so many Obama appointees still in government is a recipe for disaster.

““essential government services”

No one on this board seems to understand what essential employees means, which is not surprising since it is not at all what you would assume.

Each Agency has some discretion in defining who is essential. It is NOT just firemen and cops, otherwise why are 60-70% "essential". As an example let's look at DoD-- if an employee is executing RDT&E reimbursable funds such that execution of those funds before the end of the FY is at risk due to shutdown, he is considered essential. OTOH, an employee being paid to do "core mission" tasks would not be. What does this mean? If the Stryker combat vehicle program office is paying me to analyze different cannon designs for a modernization effort, I am essential. If I am doing the exact same analysis, but it is not paid for directly by the Stryker project office, but is instead directly allocated from mission I am non-essential.

The likely process in September is that negotiations will be up against the deadline, so there will be another CR, probably followed by another and then either a bill or a long term CR passed sometime around Christmas. We’ve been down this road before.

You wrongly assume POTUS is going to allow Ryan and McConnell to drive that agenda again. Not going to happen.

It has? What are you talking about?

(And for the record, I was an avid Trump supporter through the primary and general, with high hopes for his admin.)

Well we disagree entirely for reason previously stated. I don’t see any benefit to anything on the President’s agenda by fighting to the death over the last three months of the Omnibus cr*p sandwich.

I don’t think it’s so obvious. I’m looking how it plays out longer term rather than grabbing my baseball and going home in a snit.

Hooray.

I have been (extremely) disheartened with his climb down on foreign trade, and particularly on the wall. These were THE REASONS I decided very early, that Donald Trump was the right guy.

I have been with him since. For over two years now.

But recently I was having big second thoughts.

I have very, very glad to see he is saying September will be different.

Very much so. Thank you Donald for saying so.

Hoo-rah.

It is just that stark and just that Manichaean, Trump acts with integrity now or he is finished. His transparent effort by Tweet to have it both ways might appeal to some of his cult followers but a growing minority of conservatives are regaining their powers of discernment and will have none of it.

Cultists? Yawn. So easy to cast stones from the peanut gallery. It’s clear now GOP plantation “conservatives” never learn and are unable to discern beltway kabuki.

The fact is we’ve gotten more conservatism out of Trump than the entire careerist beltway “conservative” GOP back bench caucus has ever given us.

They were involved in it, as they are in everything (e.g., Ivanka has a standing weekly meeting with Mnuchin):

Ryno needs to cough up the border wall money, stop payment to PP And cut spending like Trump has outlined. Otherwise Trump refuses to sign.
