WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - President Donald Trump said he's open to raising the federal tax on gasoline if the money raised is directed "toward the highways," he said in an interview with Bloomberg.

Republicans in Congress have generally resisted a higher gas tax, but funding for highways has been hurt in part by the use of more energy efficient vehicles.

Let me give you a clue.

You put everything on the table when negotiating. Something that doesn't look important to you might be key to the other party. You give up almost nothing but get back something of much more value to you.

Would you be for a $0.05 a gallon increase in the gas tax to get a reduction in income tax equal to 50%? I think every FReeper, including wise @sses, would go for that.

I am one of the few non-lawyers on here that has had a graduate-level class in negotiation, so I have a clue, while you show you don't.

Today’s news is the andrew Jackson was really angry about what was happening regarding the civil war.

He probably has some valid point buried in there but because of the way he said it he is getting skewered.

Yeah, the Democrats tried this line of reasoning while Obama was still in office. It's absolute nonsense; Trump should order a public audit of motor fuel taxes and related expenditures going back to, say, 2000. Let's see how the preceding administrations and legislatures handled the money that was already be collected. First things first.

The infrastructure is falling apart.

That is the issue.

The second point is the highway monies all go to the general fund, which ends up in SS payments.

[[In New York all the gas taxes are diverted away from Highways and totally for welfare programs.]]

And all the massive cigarette taxes never made it to the hospitals and health care and schools either- like they promised it would- They stole billions from people and didn’t put it towards what they were supposed to- they are not only liars, but thieves as well

A number of people here on FR still do not understand President Trump.

Trump is gaining bargaining leverage.

Congressmen who go along with the Trump agenda, get better funding. If taxes are lower in the end, we win.

Why pay graduate level tuition to learn negotiating?

$10 buy “You Can Negotiate Anything” book.

10 bucks is good negotiating.

“A number of people here on FR still do not understand President Trump.”

You sound like Obamacare’s architect bemoaning that Americans just don’t understand how wonderful their conscription into that Ponzi boondoggle was for them.

So I suppose we’re still just too stoopid to comprehend how paying even more taxes—that politicians will glom for their pet social justice projects—will serve the greater good.
D-uhhh, sure Parley, let’s all sign on to even more subjugation, to more statist slavery.
As temperatures rise, we find politicians taking their hands out of their own pockets to try and pick ours, and resident FRiends reminding us that it’s a good thing, a real good thing.
