Trump's threats to pull out of NAFTA: Crazy like a fox?
Fox News ^ | April 28,2017 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 04/28/2017 8:13:46 AM PDT by Hojczyk

The president called the other two leaders, Justin Trudeau and Enrique Pena Nieto, and the White House issued a statement late Wednesday night: “President Trump agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the negotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries.”

Now some pundits might interpret this as lurching back and forth. But my take is that it was a deliberate strategy. And perhaps the media were used.

Hours before speaking to the leaders of Canada and Mexico, Trump sent a signal that he was thinking of unilaterally pulling out of the treaty.

“The prospect of the United States’ pulling out obviously alarmed the Canadian and Mexican leaders and prompted their calls to the White House,” the New York Times reported.

By yesterday, the president was telling reporters: “I decided rather than terminating NAFTA, which would be a pretty big, you know, shock to the system, we will renegotiate. Now, if I'm unable to make a fair deal, if I'm unable to make a fair deal for the United States, meaning a fair deal for our workers and our companies, I will terminate NAFTA.”

And that message will hover over the talks once they begin.

In negotiations, it doesn’t hurt to have the other side think you might do something crazy—even if that produces negative headlines.

They’re acting like the renegotiating bit is new - his early threats always hinged on renegotiating for better deals for Americans - whether you dump NAFTA and start negotiations, or you start renegotiating, the end result is the same - trade continues and we get a better deal.

These pundits fail to understand that it’s impossible to negotiate effectively if you are too predictable.

NAFTA is a money losing deal. Announce you are leaving then get everyone to the table to negotiate from a position of strength.

You're absolutely right. We heard renegotiate 100's of times during the campaign.

Now they're begging Trump to renegotiate....Love it...

The operative description came from some reporter, I’d attribute it if I remembered who it was:

“Trump’s supporters take him seriously but not literally. The media takes him literally but not seriously”.

Saying “pull out of NAFTA” is an opening bid to get the negotiating started, just like we might tell someone “I’ll give you five bucks for that old piece of junk” at a flea market. Once in a while the initial offer is accepted but more often it’s just the starting point and negotiation leads to a result both sides can live with.

I don’t care if we “pull out” of NAFTA or not, I care about American jobs and economic growth, and there are always repercussions and unintended consequences from abrupt change. I have confidence that Trump and his team will negotiate a much better deal for the USA, whether or not it involves literally “pulling out”.

“...negotiation leads to a result both sides can live with.”

But that has been a foreign concept to our government heretofore. Our “negotiating strategy,” promulgated usually by our “State” Dept, has been as long as the other side gets a good deal and “professes” that they still like us we’re good to go!

Can he actually pull out without support from the Uniparty?

Including the fake pass. You ever seen that one?

The arms are shot out like a pass but the basketball is let to drop and then quickly caught.

As rumors spread of the possible action, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto called the
president urging him not to pull out of the accord. “Let me think about it,” Mr. Trump said.
Within a half hour a call came in from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with
a similar request.

After the talks, Mr. Trump was convinced “they’re serious about it and I will negotiate
rather than terminate,” the president said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal
on Thursday.

"Read Art of the Deal....these reporters are as dumb as rocks.."

They so don't get PDJT, you start from an Alpha-Male farthest position of strength and move towards what can be accomplished.

On his tax policy the throw away item IMHO?

the Blue State loss of writing off their State Taxes? What will be get in return, they comply and give up ALL their sanctuary cities, given almost all these cities are in blue states....

Crazy like a Fox he is....

Sort of like the threat to pull out of NATO — after which Euros started coughing up all kinds of money.

Our President will renegotiate NAFTA with Mexico and Canada to our advantage.

Mexico and Canada will agree and sign on.

Mexico and Canada will trumpet to the world that their courageous actions protected the world from the acts of a lunatic. Leftists will agree.

America will benefit from the new treaty. The MSM and Leftists will denigrate President Trump.

Our President,DJT, operates on a different plane than anyone who has held the office, perhaps ever. Except maybe the high military folks like Eisenhower.

Not only “like us”, but there have been hidden agendas that we’re only starting to get a whiff of, and it doesn’t smell like perfume...

Like how the undercurrent of organized international criminal activity and those who run it - ranging from drugs and human organs to armaments for those we favor and even nuclear materials has been protected by previous administrations. Why? Follow the money. What we know or suspect about Crooked Hillary is just the tip of the iceberg, according to what investigators like George Webb have been disclosing.

Trump said the people doing our negotiating were stupid, but maybe they were actually working at cross-purposes, which made their decisions appear to be stupid until you know the rest of the story...

It is “diplomacy” as carried on by a businessman who is working for the best deal he can get for his employer and this Diplomat is more astute than the rest.

I’ve been a Trumper from day one, but the reports of .7 growth kind of sobered me up. The resistance to Donald is so intense and unrelenting it is obvious that media, and the establishment are so intent on bringing him down that they are scorching and salting the earth on their onslaught, completely losing sight of the good of the country and world.

He said today he did not realize the job would be as hard as it is. Well it is doubly hard for him on purpose, but he must figure out a way to do it.

Pray.
