FCC Chair: ‘Hysterical Prophecies’ Led Dems To Almost Break The Internet In Just Two Years
Daily Caller ^ | April 26 2017 | Eric Liebermann

(FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai said in a speech Wednesday that a Democratic-led FCC during the final two years of former President Barack Obama’s tenure almost oversaw the demise of a “free and open” internet.

Pai outlined the history of internet policy, saying that for almost two decades the FCC respected a “competitive free market” for the internet, one that was “unfettered by Federal or State regulation.”....

[ ]

Through Title II, the Obama administration pushed for net neutrality — the principle that all internet traffic should be treated equally, which some (like former FCC chairman and Democrat Tom Wheeler) argue gives small ISPs the same chance of succeeding in the marketplace.

Pai though, argues, that net neutrality hurts consumers because it would disallow companies from offering special deals appreciated by all classes of society. AT&T, for example, was offering free services under its “DirecTV Now” feature, but the Obama administration’s FCC sent a letter to the company telling it to stop the practice since it violated net neutrality rules. The FCC asserted that AT&T cannot offer free data for its own services, while charging for data used on other video-streaming companies, namely Netflix and Hulu.

[ ]

The government controlling the internet with an iron fist, Pai claims, is dangerous to free speech, adding that the First Amendment explicitly says government is supposed to protect speech, not regulate it.

[ ]

.... “Instead, we need rules that focus on growth and infrastructure investment, rules that expand high-speed Internet access everywhere and give Americans more online choice, faster speeds, and more innovation.”

[ ]

By repealing Title II, Pai asserts it will mean “the nation’s most expert and experienced privacy regulator will once again be a cop on the beat protecting Americans’ online privacy,” an approach reportedly embraced up until 2015.

The Toll Net Neutrality Takes On The Internet, Summed Up In Three Paragraphs

From Pai’s speech:
Smaller, competitive providers have also been hit. For example, one small Arkansas ISP called Aristotle told Congress last year: ‘Before the [Title II Order] was adopted, it was our intention to triple our customer base’ and ‘cover a three-county area. However, we have pulled back on those plans, scaling back our deployment to three smaller communities that abut our existing network.’

Other small providers followed suit. KWISP Internet, which serves 475 customers in rural northern Illinois, delayed its plans to upgrade its network and increase consumers’ speeds from 3 Mbps to 20 Mbps. Wisper ISP, a provider that serves 8,000 customers around St. Louis, Missouri, also cut back its investments, resulting in slower speeds.

And just this week, 22 small ISPs, each of which has about 1,000 broadband customers or fewer, told the FCC that the Title II Order had ‘affected [their] ability to obtain financing.’ They said it had ‘slowed, if not halted, the development and deployment of innovative new offerings which would benefit our customers.’ And they said Title II hung ‘like a black cloud’ over their businesses.

All of you need to “drop Mr. Pai an little e-mail and tell him and his cohorts at the FCC to get off their worthless a$$es and DO SOMTHING to fix the rampant abuse by “telemarketers” of our nations citizens who have a phone.

Example:

Last night, in a space of less than five minutes, we had no less than SIX calls from “Suzie” advising that since she “thinks” we have stayed at one of “her properties” before, that we need to “push 1” to get our $100 “free gift certificate.” Mind you each incoming number was different and each one said “no caller ID, “not a valid number,” or “unvailable.” Even after I listened to the last one and “pushed 2” to be removed from their “list,” I got two more identical calls.
And FWIW, I would suggest that the FCC demand that AT&T fix the problem they themselves create by selling these people DID phone service that they use to abuse and harass AT&Ts average Joe phone and cell phone customers. We are to the point where our home phone ( now VOIP) is as a practical matter unusable because of the phalanx of incoming TM calls. We now generally let every call go to VM, and unlike cell phones, VIOP ( i.e. “wireline phones”) are difficult to block unwanted calls and there are limitations on just how many you can block once you figure out the arcane procedure for so doing. As of this writing, I have nearly as many “blocked callers” in the Contact List of my iPhone as I have legitimate Contacts. Do Not Call List my a$$! That’s the biggest scam ever perpetrated on the public by our government.

Net Neutrality destroys incentive to invest in internet transport by forcing carriers to treat Netflix the same as Free Republic.

Don’t worry, FR is text based and will get through for as long as Jim and John can keep the servers up.

However, why shouldn’t an ISP be able to offer Netflix a Quality of Service (QoS) that ensures their data arrives in a preferred fashion...for a price?

It’s the CONTENT providers concentrated in Silicon Valley (Facebook, Google etc.) that oppose such an arrangement. They want to compel the ISP to carry all traffic equally...and essentially free. That’s a bad deal for any and every ISP.

No wonder they are slowing investment.

But the FCC could actually, “fix Do Not Call,” whereas I am doubtful SS can be fixed; ditto for Obolacare.

Like you, in the last month, I’ve been hounded by so many callers that I, too, don’t answer my telephone. Another scam going on now is that the incoming call has a local area code, but is out of the area. I did a search on a number and found ten people complaining that the number is a 800-solicitation call and not in our area. I gave up blocking calls as they keep changing the number. I’m on the worthless DO NOT CALL list both home and cell. It’s worthless!

Any other Freepers with this BS issue going on? How do we get the FCC to fix this NOW?

I don’t answer the phone if I don’t know the number, and won’t call back if they won’t leave a message. Our cable system has incoming calls come up on the screen, so it takes some of the stress out. Phony health care companies are the worst.

Democrats have a point on Utilities like AT&T and Comcast which operate as a cartel or local monopoly due to infrastructure controls.

If they were to charge per MB of data uses only for their competitors they would drive those competitors out of business. Giving their otherwise inferior service a natural advantage.
This is a similar problem with bundling in ultilites. They ask you to pay for a whole lot of stuff you don’t want and you don’t have a choice because they have a local monopoly.

The solution is for local manipulates, and States to demand neutrality and/or competition in exchange for access to said infrastructure.

In your mind it may be the biggest scam. In my opinion it is the distribution of my hard earned dollars to the lazy who do not bother to improve their skills or work is the biggest scam.

Do not ever buy anything from unsolicited calls. If you do it even once, your name will be circulated as a sucker buyer..
