More than a third of Europeans and Americans would be happy to go without cash and rely on electronic forms of payment if they could, and at least 20 percent already pretty much do so, a study showed on Wednesday.

The study, which was conducted in 13 European countries, the United States and Australia, also found that in many places where cash is most used, people are among the keenest to ditch it.

Overall, 34 percent of respondents in Europe and 38 percent in the United States said they would be willing to go cash-free, according to the survey conducted by Ipsos for the ING bank website eZonomics.

Twenty-one percent and 34 percent in Europe and the United States, respectively, said they already rarely use cash.

Idiots. Idiots if they give up physical means of exchange.

To those on here talking about writing checks, checks are not cash.

I _want_ to be all-cash, but plastic is too dang convenient. Discovered I’d gone cashless when I realized I hadn’t had cash for three months.

I’ve got news for Jeremy Gaunt:

Plastic money is what is nearing extinction. Cash-only is what is soon to fall into place as the banks attempt to create “bail-in” laws.

I suggest that everyone store away small bills to enable transactions when banking dies, as it most certainly must as people lose faith in them.

What an interesting idea...

The biggest taxi service is just an app - no vehicles (until lately, different story).
The biggest hospitality service is just an app - no hotels.
The biggest social gathering place is just an app - no floorspace.
etc.
Now we need the biggest banking service as just an app - no vaults or ledgers.

I think this article has it all wrong. With the high fees charged by credit card companies and the pervasive risks of identity theft and credit card fraud, I’m seeing more examples of people and businesses who are using cash — and even personal checks — in lieu of credit/debit cards.

An endorsed check is treated as cash in many situations. I almost learned that the hard way while traveling across a border.

I’m...well invested in convenient-sized packaged units of semi-precious metals (brass, lead, copper, etc).

Definitely!

Their “survey” is about as good as the polls that said Hitlery was going to win.

Without cash how will Democrats pay their drug dealer, bookie and hookers? You can’t write check or use a credit card because wifey will find out.

So VISA would get a bite out of every transaction that was formerly fee free in cash. Totally unfair.

You dream.

The “Governments of men” have about 7 more years of existence.

The people left behind after the Day of Trumpets will be very cautious after being royally screwed by trusting their government.

King Yeshua will not have a bank.

I am the outlier here. I get cash sometimes.

Today I just made my first Bitcoin purchase of $1000. I have a buddy that owes me 8-large and he wanted to send a Cashier’s check. Are you kidding me? As a veteran I bank with a certain Big Bank based in San Antonio that doesn’t have branches, and I don’t think phone app deposit takes Cashier’s Checks. Plus I lent him a chunk in PayPal so he has an account.

The Bitcoin is rising daily, but I’ll likely use it for Sports gambling. Much less hassle than doing international charges, and some sites apparently allow you to be anonymous, though unless I go through two VPNs and a proxy I’m sure they could find me. However a person that bets like me (recreational) isn’t going to raise too many red flags.

I almost cringe when I have to write out a check. Gotta get my double air miles.

I’ll turn 49 this year.
