RNC Chair: Base Will Walk if We Don’t Build Border Wall

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel warned fellow Republicans that voters “are going to hold us accountable” if “we do not keep the campaign promises that were made,” during an interview Wednesday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

McDaniel predicted many Americans would be frustrated by the news a downpayment to start construction of the border wall would be dropped from a must-pass spending bill in Congress this week. Noting that building the border wall was “front and center” in Trump’s 2016 campaign, the RNC chair insisted that “our voters are going to expect us to act on it.”

“I know that our voters are going to hold us accountable in 2018 if we do not keep the campaign promises that we made,” McDaniel said. “And so, when you get to Washington, sometimes you forget what was said outside. And it’s important that we bring that back to Washington and let them hear what the voters expect of this government and this president.”

LifeZette editor-in-chief Laura Ingraham referred to reports of GOP leaders “sitting behind closed doors” and laughing at the prospect of building the wall, to which McDaniel warned those lawmakers are “going to lose the trust of our base.”

I don't know much about Ronna Romney McDaniel...other than she appears to be the smartest Republican in America right now.

Which, sadly, doesn't seem to be that hard.

The question is how big a stick of dynamite they want to use to blow themselves up trying to redeem a promise that (1) they didn't make themselves and (2) Trump should not have made in the first place.

You seem to be an advocate for the status quo, in regards to this issue.

Most people in this country are sick to death of the status quo, in relation to immigration (and just about every other issue you can name). It's WHY we elected Trump in the first place.

His promises on the campaign trail merely reflected where most people want this country to go. Trump was simply smart enough, and observant enough to get it. He shaped his campaign around the needs and desires of tens of millions of us who've been screaming to the rafters for decades.

He most definitely SHOULD have promised a wall, and the dunderhead Republicans in Congress had better come to grips with the fact that this is the PEOPLE'S agenda - not theirs. We intend to see this country put to rights, and we will oust every one of them to get the job done, if that's what it takes!

She apparently understands that this is the last chance. Question is, how will she handle it?

They RINOS who call themselves conservatives have effectivlely rendered the term conservative meaningless, if not given it a negative connotation. A third party is going to have to come up with a better name or label.

sadly you are most likely correct. I go back and forth as it seems like timewise we be due and although I was sure Trump would win I was preparing for HRC.

We are headed to a point where people are operating off of two mutually exclusive sets of facts. Rationalism is not operable under such reality.

All I know is I'm still getting ready just not as fast by a long margin - hope thats a smart call.

Thats a lot of cats I only have one dog and am not a cat person still thats a lot of cats.

Trump is the LAST change the RNC has for ever winning another election for 100 years if ever. They blow this, kiss it all goodbye.

Whatever is preventing the Republican Congress from properly representing its constituents must be identified and routed.

True, true. And that holds true regardless of whether it is outside influence or RINOs acting on their own!

all he has to do to build the wall is take the already authorized funds from DHS!!

I was sort of wondering how far into this thread we'd go before someone brought this up.

My question is, over the years, how much money has been appropriated and not spent on the border wall? Combine that with Ted Cruz' idea to confiscate Mexican drug lords' money for the wall* and there'd surely be enough $$ to make quite a start.

I realize the appropriated but not spent funds are not just sitting in a pile somewhere, but, still, if Bush and Obama can direct the money elsewhere, by executive fiat, Trump should be able to direct $$ back.

*Note to certain people extolling Sen. Cruz' former viewpoints: He now seems to be not only supportive of the wall, but creative in finding ways to fund it. He knows at least some of the reasons why he came in 2nd...

I agree. Trump can compel the wall or refuse to sign the budget. Why not stand by the base? Stand by the promise?

Why is it going to be easier to get funding in October after the Democrats WIN this round?

President Trump is very different from Candidate Trump. But NOT because he doesn’t want to be Candidate Trump, he does. I firmly believe the Central Bankers read him the ‘riot act’ and told him exactly what they would permit and what they would not permit.

Who are these central bankers? The ones whose names we don’t know and faces we will never see. You know, the ones that were never charged in the 2008 and beyond banking scandals. There are laws for us, and no laws for them. They are....how did they put it? Too Big to Fail.

"Ryan and The GOPe are have pissed me off."

TY.... Its all good, don't get your BP up over this, follow me what Ronna has just done...

* She goes on a PDJT friendly show, Laura got it in 16', she is not a Uni-Party girl for a long time.
* Natural audience for all deplorable's, aka us to get the message out, we were listening.
* Then, Ronna subtlety fires one right across the bow of Paul Ryan. How Trumpian.

She was politely telling him do your freakin' job, or you will be a minority leader at best and if their is political blood in the water, the Dem's would focus on replacing with a "D" in his seat in 2018.

Did Ronna send the message, or was it PDJT's message. I think the latter... Best 100 days Evah !!!

In my case, if the wall is not built, my reaction will not be “resignation”. It will be resolute anger.
