“Common bleach would work just fine.”

Yeah, it would. Until it lost its effectiveness after 6 months - a year. Then you will be SOL without a Plan B.

You give the NORKS way too much credit.

I call your attention to recent news.

Failed North Korean missile exploded 'within seconds,' US says

Some experts believe it was US missiles that immediately brought this NK missile down.

If we shoot their satellites out of the sky, it might be more difficult for them to attack us and spy on us.

Crap. Now I “feel” excluded. Guess I better seek counseling. Not that I’ve ever needed it before. LOL!

“Yeah except that the only current manner to produce an EMP is to explode a nuclear bomb...that has world wide consequences that are far worse than losing the grid

Right now the fat boy can’t get a rocket off the launch pad”

Uh, “Fat Boy” has 2, count’em, 2 satellites in orbit. How’s that for “can’t get a rocket off the launch pad?”

Underestimating the capabilities and intent of enemies is a fatal conceit that has cost many nations, and many tens of millions of people, their lives. I’d prefer to be a bit paranoid and alive, than happy-go-lucky and watch my family starve to death, thank you very much.

“If the world’s most famous bird-watcher hits the USA with and EMP Weapon, he will get his Kimchi fried.”

And, if he does that, our wiping him and his country will help us HOW, exactly? It won’t restore our grid, food deliveries, power to hospitals, power for refining or extracting petroleum, etc., nor will it stop roving gangs of semi-starving barbarians from attacking anyone that they believe may have food and/or water.

Think about the whole package, not just one tiny element.

"Iran has launch vehicles that work. Bowl head has the warheads (in theory)...."

..... However none of his delivery systems have proven to navigate past a distance of a few hundred miles. I highly doubt that another nation would do N Korea a nice cordial favor and launch an attack upon the US for fear of retaliation.

Hey I know. We could fly the space shuttle up there and capture their satellites and reprogram them and........... Awwww crap. I musta forgot we don’t do that anymore.

Yeah, it was expensive but it sure was fun and provided me a pretty good living for 36 yrs. LOL!

Actually 1950's and 1960's technology.

90% of Americans dead? Probably not. But, if you bring down even a portion of the grid for any length of time it means no gasoline, no communications, no cold food storage, no food delivery, no fresh clean water, etc. etc. The longer it lasts and the more people effected, the more deaths there will be.

West of the Mississippi and especially the West Coast would be particularly exposed to such an attack from North Korea. I would not laugh it off. It is the cheapest, lowest tech, and best way to attack the USA and inflict mass casualties and damage.

Too bad your link is to a paper that discusses how a non nuclear EMP bomb COULD be developed

“You believe some fat kid with a bad haircut and 1970’s technology will kill 90% of us Americans?”

People made fun of Hitler’s appearance, too. Fat lot of good it did them when the Wehrmacht rolled in.

EMP was, FYI, discovered back in the early 1960s. Google “Starfish Prime” to find out the facts.

Here are some other facts: Any nation that can build nuclear weapons, and which can orbit a satellite (the Norks can and have done BOTH), can launch an EMP attack on any location on the entire globe. Also, the technology for enhancing the gamma ray production of a nuclear weapon is not all that sophisticated or difficult to master - if you’ve already got the smarts and equipment to build a nuke in the first place. Get out of your mind the silly and uninformed opinion that a huge (or YUUUUGE) nuclear explosion is necessary to a successful EMP attack. The simple fact is that fission weapons (i.e. A-bombs) are FAR more efficient at producing the types of EMP that would be devastating to a modern society than fusion weapons (i.e. thermo-nuclear devices or H-bombs).

Get informed FIRST, then deliver your skepticism. Until then, you’re just another ignorant victim of normalcy bias.

Can you and your family survive and prosper without electricity ? Have you tried it for a week or longer ?
Can the Nation survive a massive electric magnetic pulse (EMP)or a mega-Solar Flare ?

“..... Kim Jong’s rockets can only travel a few hundred miles at most .... so why are we panicking? Japan and S Korea are the ones that should actually be worried about this.”

North Korea has 2 satellites orbiting the Earth as we speak. They could literally explode a nuclear weapon over any point on the planet.

Care to reconsider your contempt for its capabilities?

“The threat is somewhat overrated: you need H-bombs to make an effective EMP weapon. I don’t believe NK has them yet.”

No, actually you are WRONG. Fission weapons (A-bombs) are actually better suited to producing the gamma rays that are responsible for the EMP effects that we are debating here. Oh, and they can be relatively easily “tuned” to convert more of their energy into gamma rays (as opposed to heat and blast).

Try reading up on EMP before making statements like that. Yes, there is a lot that we don’t know about it (real world experimentation is a bit of a bitch, you know), but the amount of sheer ignorance about EMP shown on this thread is rather stunning.

"Until it lost its effectiveness after 6 months - a year. Then you will be SOL without a Plan B."

Plan B is to just boil the water. If I've made it 6 mo. to a year then I've obviously got fire.

Bleach is heavy and hard to carry if you have to,go mobile
And hunting for water requires mobility
Look at what backpackers use - iodine
This pure stuff weighs an oz and purifies thousands of gallons of waters but you have to know how to use it ( can be toxic) and not be allergic to,iodine

Or get a lifestraw - easy to carry purifies couple thousand gallons
