An antivirus service used by tens of thousands of businesses and millions of home users shut down an untold number of computers around the world after it mistakenly identified core parts of Microsoft Windows as threats, the company confirmed Tuesday.
Webroot Inc. of Broomfield, Colorado, said it issued an updated detection rule that "identified false positives" for critical Windows operating files Monday afternoon, resulting in those files' being "quarantined" and inaccessible to Windows.
Kristin Miller, a spokeswoman for Webroot, said the program incorrectly classified as "bad" a common folder that is often targeted for malware. She said that the false positives were being rolled back and that Webroot users should leave the program on and connected to the internet to get the fix.

The jokes just write themselves. :-)
I’ll be able to ping the list a little later tonight, thanks!
“Popular Antivirus Program Mistakenly IDs Windows as a Threat”

Finally - a truthful antivirus program!

Go for the low-hanging apples first, I always say!
Finally, an accurate assessment of M$ “technology”.
When you’re right you’re right...
Bwahahaha
I’m afraid there’s no mistake.
Just like Windows updates, they too are a substantial threat.
Window 10 is a threat. Its malware, ransomware, forced itself on people who didnt want it.
One reason why I have both Windows and Linux on my PCs; you have to try pretty hard to get malware on Linux - when I use Windows I have at least half a dozen programs to stop the nasties.
As a plus, you can run a check for malware on the Windows “side” of a PC from the Linux installation. A lotta malware “hides” when Windows is running, but you can catch them “sleeping” when you scan from the Linux “side”.

Why in pluperfect hell are people using Webroot, anyway?
Thanks to upchuck for the ping!!
BTW, I can't find any article that limits this to any given version of Windows -- might affect all of them.
LOL
Actually, if Windows 10 is involved, there's a great chance that it IS malware...
Wish I had the time to list all the things that have driven me crazy for days, and after failing to find "my mistake," come to find out it was Win 10 all along.
One of my sons, who is in IT for a large multinational found and fixed my last "mistake."
... Microshaft caused it...
And I've only had this new Win 10 laptop less than two months.
And Win 10 has been out how long now? About three years?
Sometimes it seems like three thousand...
