Border Wall: President Trump just had his bluff called — again
Washington Post ^ | 04/25/2017 | Aaron Blake

For the second time in two major legislative battles, the Trump White House has issued an ultimatum — only to back down.

In the health care debate, the president was going to force a House vote on the package and dare skeptical Republicans to vote against replacing Obamacare, before abandoning that plan in the face of defeat.

And now, in the government funding debate, he's backing off his previous demand that Congress approve funding for his border wall. As The Washington Post's Philip Rucker, Robert Costa and David Weigel report:

But with a Friday deadline looming to pass a new spending bill, the Trump administration projected confidence that a shutdown would be avoided. In the face of fierce Democratic opposition to funding the wall’s construction, White House officials signaled Monday that the president may be open to an agreement that includes money for border security if not specifically for a wall, with an emphasis on technology and border agents rather than a structure.

Trump showed even more flexibility Monday afternoon, telling conservative journalists in a private meeting that he was open to delaying funding for wall construction until September, a White House official confirmed.

The wall, of course, was the biggest applause line for Trump throughout his campaign — often taking the form of a call-and-response with his approving crowds. And given how divisive it is, inserting it into must-pass legislation like a government funding bill seemed to be the best way to get what Trump wants.

That's what the White House tried. Office of Management and Budget Chairman Mick Mulvaney said last week that any government-funding bill must include funding for the border wall. Throughout the weekend, top White House aides including Mulvaney suggested Trump might veto a spending bill that doesn't fund his border wall.

Trump should tell Congress if you don’t fund the wall I’m going to order the military to saturate the border with landmines. They are cheaper and far more effective. And I don’t need congressional approval.

Let’s not be too quick to sell President Trump’s negotiating strategies short.

The anti-American Democrats may STILL vote to CAUSE a “government shutdown”.

If so, such a “shut-down” will allow our blameless President to “shut-down” some wasteful “grants”, “programs” and government agencies WITHOUT having to beg Democrats to NOT fillibuster whatever “skinny” budget the GOP House produces.

He’s going to let the dims kill themselves with a thousand cuts . . . Now every act of terrorism can be laid at their feet for refusing to allow a border wall.

With all due respect, this is a foolish and silly comment. Republicans and the courts are working just as hard as the Democrats to stop the President.

Yeah. We sane people know that it would have been completely done on day 10.

But three months after inauguration day? Come on that is way too much time, amirite?

Man it feels good to be an impatient douche! We can criticize people for not doing 4 years of work in less than 4 months from the comfort of our ass behind a keyboard!

High five, fellow piss and moaner!

You sound like that fem boy dweeb Daniel Horowitz.

Oh please, spare me the dramatic chipmunk, fainting couch act, Shakespeare.

Sorry that 4 months in every campaign promise hasn’t been filled.

Most people that aren’t stupid weren’t expecting them to.

Obama didn’t have to deal with people this utterly moronic in his first 100 days. God knows we should export you paper spine types to that party and maybe they can put up with your nonsense.

My feelings exactly. Who knows what is going on in Trump’s head but we can be sure that he has a very busy brain. Patience America.

This was the old tactic of throw the shiny toy while you take the steaks off the grill and into the house.
Then the toy will come right back to him in the form of more border agents and technical means with the wall to follow shortly.

"All I care about in the first 100 days is that Gorsuch has taken his seat....and Schumer absolutely failed in his struggle to be the big boss of the party."

Well, Schumer lost on the Gorsuch battle, but won this round of the wall founding, so 1-1 tie with Trump so far?

That’s probably why the WP and others write stories like this. They are attempting to demoralize us and marginalize Trump.

In my view Trump is doing just fine demoralizing us without the help of the media. And in this case, I’m happy to see the WP ridicule him for backing down. He better get his shiit together before the midterms, because if he doesn’t the Rats are going to take back the Congress.

Apples and oranges. Why does this wall have to be built immediately? It's almost 16 years since 9-11 and Congress has not fulfilled THEIR job to secure the border. It was all blah, blah, blah...And Obama turned it into an even worse mess.

Sometimes it's better to just slow down a bit....and that's what they're doing.

Yes, it would sure seem like he is rolling on every topic: Obamacare repeal, Obama’s amnesty, border wall, etc. Let’s see if he completes that roll over with Congress or decides to show some balls and act like the president we elected.

Well and truly said. If he doesn’t stop rolling over by the midterms, he’ll be a freaking one term lame duck. His hardcore backers are getting pissed, and I’m one of them.

I didn’t make the claims of what would be done in the first 100 days. I didn’t make the claim that it would be among the FIRST things I would accomplish.

Someone either can’t figure the process or they made a claim full well knowing it was not true.

I’m not impatient. I just like promises that are made kept. Including the promised timetable. Had the timetable not been a part of the promise, I would have been patient until his last day in the WH.

A little patience goes a long way.
I’m watching the Kabuki and talked to my wife about the scramble to expect around the end of the summer recess NEXT YEAR. November 2018 is going to be interesting.

Loved reading your comments, you are welcome to come over for pop-corn and (cheap but very cold) Beer.

Has any President had the number of people claiming navigating Washington would be childsplay when it comes to getting things done not only on time but early.
