I did some quick research. If I were caught carrying a concealed handgun in California I would be charged with a misdemeanor. I would not let the lack of a permit from stopping me from carrying concealed in California.

If you point that gun at someone, you will be charged with a felony.

Misdemeanor for illegal carry. If you pull it on someone it escalates dramatically. If you shoot someone, even in an otherwise justifiable scenario, you're going to prison.
I moved out of that absolute sewer of a state in 2006 and don't ever plan on going back.
