Situational awareness is a lesson people should be taking to heart these days, regardless of where they live.

I'm not sure that real situational awareness can be taught, but living in a truly dangerous environment does tend to naturally enhance the ability.

It fades with age, too. Nowadays people can walk up behind me, and I don’t even know they are there until they put their hand on my shoulder.
