Well, Ms. Keiffer did not go far enough!
She should have expanded her essay to make the case for replacing the income tax with the FAIRtax and abolishing the IRS!
Find out how you can help us do that at https://www.fairtax.org.
We will never be a FRee people so long as we have and income tax and an IRS!
PS If you would like to get on (or off of) my FAIRtax ping list, please FReepmail me.
good idea !
50% of Americans already pay no income tax. Let’s just liberate the other 50%
Fairtax is not fair, because too many people won’t pay a dime. National sales tax is fair since all people would pay a share.
Repatriating dollars - if there were no tax on income, billions would come back.. and business would want to be headquartered here.
border-adjustable taxation - if the nrst were in place, there would be an excise on imports AND exports would leave the US without embedded tax costs.
fairness - the nrst puts the same marginal rate on everyone. Rich, poor, illegal, bald, skinny, etc. No more favoring one group over another [cough... illegals... cough]. And the prebate reduces the problem of taxing necessities
the list goes on....
Unfortunately, the IRS won’t be abolished. It will have a new job looking for black markets - folks who selling retail, but not charging the sales tax.
But it is still better than the Income tax.

You’re dead on, absolutely right, yet even though the income tax is more than a century old, just a few years ago I was attacked on FR any time I suggested that this is NOT a free country! I notice that such statements are not attacked so vigorously now. I pray that the Donald can change things and he seems to be working hard to do so but I don’t know how freedom can be restored when it appears that the majority of Americans, even those who claim to be freedom loving patriots, don’t seem to have a real concept of freedom. Most would accept something far more restrictive than our actual constitution will allow and call it freedom even though it is far removed from true freedom.
I will see my 73rd birthday in five weeks and while the situation during my childhood was far better than now nothing close to real freedom has existed in this country during my lifetime. Those who think otherwise either lack knowledge or have a vastly different idea of freedom than I have ever had.
