Border Lawmakers Balk at Donald Trump’s Wall Request
wsj.com ^ | April 21, 2017

Not a single member of Congress who represents the territory on the southwest border said they support President Donald Trump’s request for $1.4 billion to begin construction of his promised wall, according to a Wall Street Journal survey, testing the administration’s ability to reach a deal on government funding next week.

Most lawmakers representing the region—both Democrats and Republicans—said they are opposed and many said they have unanswered questions. A few were noncommittal, but not a single member of the House or Senate representing the region expressed support for the funding request. That includes nine members of the House and eight senators across four states: Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Still, the White House is holding firm on its position.

“You’re always going to have constituencies within both parties that have local issues—we get that,” Mick Mulvaney, the head of the Office of Management and Budget, said in an interview. He added that the GOP leadership is on board to fight for the funding because “they know it’s a priority for the president.”

I don’t know which is more damnable: Congressional greed, or Congressional cowardice?”

BOTH!

Maybe we will have to invade and set the new border with our army.

The Panama Canal would be perfect.

I agree - the Dems think they have leverage over Trump, since they have a bunch of GOPe’s in the House and Trump needs 60 votes in the Senate.

But here’s the rub - they will not get anywhere unless they can get 67 Senate votes and 290 House votes (i.e., override Trump’s budget vetoes) - and good luck rounding up the 100 or so House members needed for that - as EACH ONE will likely be primaried if they side with the Democrats on something this important. Similarly for Senate.

In other words, Trump is now the man with THE PEN AND THE PHONE and he’s sounding a lot like he’s ready to use that leverage.

The money and the authority were already appropriated in the early 2000’s under Bush II.

The No-Wall Street Urinal is a political rag sheet for the globalist-corpratist establishment.

“McCain and Flake have both long been opponents of border security”

The irony is that the Gang of 8 Amnesty Bill sponsored by these clowns had 1.5 Billion allocated to border fencing. I guess they never intended to deliver that part.

It was Kay Bailey Hutchison who neutered the 2006 Secure Fence Act with an amendment giving local authorities control over what would be built.

TX politicians worry about the impact upon US businesses located along the border. Over 4 million Border Crossing Cards (BCC) have been issued to Mexican nationals who cross daily to enter the US to shop and conduct business. They actually bus Mexican children to attend US schools. Follow the money.

Ted Cruz seems to be against the wall...

Source?

Cruz said he believes Congress "should use the power of the purse, use appropriation, to implement good policy."

Border “lawmakers” against a wall must be compromised by too many criminalian constituents - exactly the situation that would be fixed by a wall.

Threaten to put the border on the northern border of each of those states and let the voters of the states handle the rest.

The 1986 amnesty was supposed to secure the border.
The 2006 Secure Fence Act was supposed to secure the border.
They pass these things just to get the amnesty.
The border security never happens.

It’s about time we have a detailed cost analysis of what these sanctuary cities policies are costing.

While education of illegals cost overruns in most school districts are the most frequently quoted. The hidden expenses and effects of what these sanctuary policies are costing US gets buried.. They’re resulting in budget shortfalls on everything from road repair (gas tax diversion) to healthcare. Plus essential services including garbage pickup.

When the reciprocal question of the rights and benefits given to illegals but the same would never be granted (including voting) to a citizen of the United States in those countries where these illegals originate from. It gets obfuscated by the media which should be trashed along with the politician uttering charges of “nativist” or racist. Because such arguments are for the lowering and certainly not defending of the value of American citizenship.

The border is international territory. It's not about ordinary Americans owning land in Mexico.

You give Mexico $25 billion for all the land 10-20 miles south of the existing border (including the Northern half of Baja California) and they'll change their minds real quick.

Heck, I don’t care if they come here to spend money, or go to school here as long as they’re picking up the tab. It’s the illegal squatters and criminals I want out.

Is there any support for a well-placed, well-financed Texas Republican to successfully Primary Cruz?
