New Jersey millennials may be sad to hear that the Garden State isn’t the best place to be. A new Wallethub study found that New Jersey is ranked 40 out of 51 states for quality of life among millennials. When asked why New Jersey was ranked so low, Wallethub stated that housing difficulties were a key factor. “Forty-five percent of millennials are still living with their parents, that is what really dragged New Jersey down,” said Jill Gonzalez, a analyst for Wallethub.

Maybe I’ve missed it, but is there one single thing in this nation that millennials see as positive for them?
I must be hearing only the worst from the 2-5% habitual whiners.
My young nephew and his wife pay12.5k/yr in real estate taxes alone. They both have good paying jobs. No wonder so many are living in their parents basements.
New Jersey is 11th worse for moronials. However it is #1 worst for anything living.

Been to 49 states (including New Jersey), and 36 countries to boot. Just joking about the bad rap.
All Jersey jokes aside, I tell my kids that NJ was a great state to grow up in in the 80’s. Actually, it was a great state for a long time. Most of the state is small suburban towns, you have NY about an hour away from half the state, and Philly the other half. The shore is accessible and uniquely Jersey, but the other end of the state is mountains and country and pretty rural. Sports teams, theater, higher eduacation options everywhere. It really was great at one time.
However, housing costs are insane and taxes in particular. It is not uncommon for a middle class family to have a property tax bill in excess of $10K and most times its pushing 20K. The state is ridiculously diverse and getting worse, with a huge illegal immigration problem that has turned towns i knew as a kid into something resembling a third world parody. So it’s no wonder millenials see it as a bad choice. Problem is, we’ve already ruined Florida, NC and are now starting to ruin SC as people’s flee. I think when i retire, as odd as it sounds, I’m going upstate NY to a little slice of nowhere to just relax and get away from everything.
Taxes are insane, but the state (thankfully) still has enough foreclosures and short sales to make buying a decent house under $150 to 200k quite possible.
The catch? Those properties were often neglected and need quite a bit of manual work to make them comfy to live in. Many millennials don’t have the desire nor skills to renovate a property.
26 years ago, give or take, when I was a young pup living in NJ my old man pulled me aside and said “Son, if I were a young man just starting out on my own in life, I’d go anywhere but New Jersey.” He was from upstate NY originally and lived out west for years too so he had a different perspective than my south Jersey born mom. And his perspective was that even then, NJ was taxed too much and had too many draconian laws and regulations. I didn’t listen and I married a Jersey girl and have a family with her and that would not have happened had I moved then so I won’t second guess my decision BUT to all you millenial Freepers who haven’t settled in like that yet, there’s a big country out there that’s more free and less expensive than NJ. Go experience it!
It was a great place in the 70's. Easy and cheap train ride into NYC to see the Yankees or Mets (train then subway). Concerts at MSG. The shore before local law enforcement went police state. You could take the train to half the shore, pedal to the beach. Pizza (still the best). Much more.
I left in 1982. I used to go back to "recharge." Now it gives me a headache. But it's weird to see deer in the town I grew up in -- none in the 70's or 80's.
There's no hunters left to harvest those deer throughout most of the state. NJ makes it so burdensome to be a sportsman here that unless you're willing to be told when, where, how and IF you can hunt - it's just not worth it. So the deer thrive.
Most of the folks I hunt with moved out long ago and enjoy the freedom that begins west of the Delaware River. I purchase an out-of-state for PA to join them twice a year. I've been hollered at, hit by a glass bottle and forced to jump into a drainage ditch by anti-types in Bellemead, where I used to belong to a semi-wild organization.
Hunters in the northern part of the state (where I'm from) have been robbed at gunpoint and tied naked to trees, left to freeze during deer season in December. The scum from metro NJ have figured out that hunters are generally law-abiding and easy prey.
That changes everything for me as a sportsman. When grandma passes over and the man-child has graduated, I'm outta here. Then there will be more deer for the Princton Elites to hit with their Maseratis and all the rest can enjoy elevated insurance rates. God, I hate this state. It's not the place it was 30-40 years ago.
