A new report finds that, under the guise of “personalized learning,” school-issued computer devices — now distributed to one-third of K-12 students in schools across the United States — are serving to collect and store an unprecedented amount of personal data on children without their parents’ notice or consent. A newly released investigation by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) reveals student use of technology in school has grown at a profound rate, especially with free or low-fee devices issued by schools.

Nothing is ever “free” when you get it from the government.

Agree - I was thinking the same. They think they’re getting a freebie, but the schools are getting a very good look into the lives of the kids, and their families. I’m sure there’s been cases of parents trying to be real parents (i.e., spanking their brats) that have ended up in CPS files. I also remember one case where the schools activated the cameras in the computers and had a great time ‘monitoring’ the students study habits, especially those of the teen girls, in their bedrooms (in Pennsylvania).

To date, I don’t know of any textbooks that spy on kids, but then again, I haven’t been through all of Snowden’s stuff.

Speaking of textbooks, I’m constantly amazed by the number of parents who never crack open their kids textbooks.

Big brother is the technological data nexus of big business and big government, as they become symbionts of each other.

The swamp will never be drained until the NEA puts all the power back in the hands of the locals and the locals exercise that power.

Facebook is the worst offender on the planet, making billions off of personal information sold without consent to advertisers and governments around the world. Zuckerberg, the chief thief in this scheme, has become a billionaire.

Joining Facebook is voluntary. The whole point of Facebook is to make your data known to everyone. That’s why you join it.

If you are standing in a crowd, waiting for your picture to be taken, they don’t need your permission to sell that picture. You volunteered to have it taken. There is nothing on my Facebook page that I don’t mind the whole world seeing.

Anyone who joins Facebook to protect their privacy is an idiot.

This “school issued computers” thing is the biggest scam to ever hit the U.S.

School kids DON’T NEED AN iPAD to complete their education.
Our forefathers had chalk and slate, and they were far better educated.

This is all about Apple and Microsoft suckling at the public teat IMO.

I don’t do facebook. Kids have no idea what they are doing, just like the kids in this school. Actually, if you have your picture taken, and sold without permission, that too should be illegal. The individual has a right to privacy. This is a tenet of Freerepublic, not to sell your information, not to attach tracking codes, no pop ups, nothing done here without the permission of participants.

Once your information goes to the Internet, you have lost control of it. It no longer belongs to you. It’s up to you to protect your privacy by not putting it on the Internet.

American privacy laws do not apply to foreign countries. If you back up your computer to “the Cloud” or Carbonitte or the like, you have lost control of it.

Facebook has managed to do what the government has been doing for decades, collecting personal information for fun and profit. I don’t put anything on the cloud.
