The stakes were high at the initial meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last week: No two individuals will have a greater impact on the global order in the years ahead and, beyond that, as far as any eye can see.
Personal chemistry is often a critical factor in foreign relations, and while no one expected major breakthroughs on the substantive issues, the meeting allowed the leaders to get to know each other.
So, how did Trump do? And what does it mean for this most vital of international relationships?
Trump's performance reflected his mastery of the art of the show. That the producer and star of a popular, long-running reality TV series should have formidable skills in this domain should not be surprising. But after so many missteps on so many other fronts, it was heartening to see them demonstrated.
Visible, dignified, ritualistic displays are of critical importance to the Chinese. On that score, therefore, Trump gave Xi what he wanted most from this first meeting: vivid images of respect for China as a great nation and for him as a great leader....

Show? Trump’s “death by chocolate” was amazing.
The article is a slap at Trump for not being better. “Damned by faint praise” is the term, I believe. Screw them.
The MSM never analyze the result (bottom line) of these so-called missteps.
Another way to look at it - Trumps handling of the meeting with the Chicoms was so spectacular, even the libs have no choice but offer him praise, even if faint.
The first time I remember seeing a Chinese leader smile like that.
Ivankaplomacy.
I don’t care for Ivanka and Jared making policy, but can’t wait for them to go to China for a charm offensive.
Now is the time for the USA to draw China in its sphere of influence by providing China with the fuel it so desperately needs, so that it will not have to depend on the Norks for their supply of coal.
Although China’s power plants are mostly coal-fired, they can be retrofitted to accept LNG as its alternate fuel source. It will require that China build LNG offloading facilities on its coast, retrofit their power plants by fuel burner redesign and pipelines from LNG unloading facilities to power plants. The US will have to install LNG loading facilities on its West coast, LNG liquefaction facilities near the gas fields, and pipelines in between them. All this activity will provide lots of jobs in both the US and China and long-term income for the US, but most of all, it will create goodwill between two major industrial nations. Engineering design to be done in the US and project management by locals of the respective countries. The entire project can dovetail with simultaneously creating LNG facilities to supply W.Europe with its energy source so as to wean it off the Russian gas supply that they are now addicted to. All this will truly MAGA and the planet will enjoy a PAX AMERICANA.
This piece proves Scott Adam’s theory perfectly - that Trump will rise from “Hitler” to “Incompetent” to “Competent but I still don’t like him” in the eyes of the media. Events like this accelerate the process because just as you say, the performance exceeds expectations.
In essencce the author could have said “To my surprise, Trump entertained the Chinese leader in a non-Hitlerian way” ;-)
Screw them is right Colonel!
In less than 100 days a man who has never been elected to any office has done so much good. He has gotten better with each successive day and event. He has taken major first steps in reasserting America’s place in the world in ways not seen since Reagan—IMO.
I thank God that this particular man beat the dreaded hildabeast.
I never was in a state of dread. As I told my son, Ace: (before the primaries) "I'll run against her myself, if no one challenges her." There were many, more qualified, who would have stepped up as well! I'm, and most of you, are way more qualified than Clinton!
Really cool analysis! If that happens, it’s a big step toward the Art of the Deal with the Chicoms.
Ivanka is loved already in China. Back in the late 50s in Japan, it was fascinating to see many women copy and emulate U.S. styles and fads. The Chinese are now copying and emulating Ivanka. She IS an elegant lady.
It will be a win-win situation for both the US and China and yuuugely beneficial to the whole world.
Millions are more qualified than the dreaded hildabeast, but the reality is that only a couple handful can make it to the presidential primaries of the two major parties.
I voted Cruz in the LA primaries but was quickly very glad that Trump won the nomination.
We’ll never know, but a plausible case can be made that Hillary would have beaten any of the other GOP contenders. I suspect that would have been the case.

.
Supplying energy to our NATO allies thereby lessening their burden of paying for membership fee.
