“In effect, CMP does offer forearms to veterans first.”

Nice of them to lend a hand.

“Holy crap, could you imagine... vintage and virgin...”

I don’t know whether to post a pic of Mother Theresa or Helen Thomas...

Vintage yes, virgin no.

CMP goes through them and grades the condition. The price is determined by the condition but there is still a certain amount of risk/luck.

I bought a CMP M1 Garand about 3 years ago, it took many months for it to ship but totally worth it. Mine is muzzle and throat erosion 2, it’s a H&R M1 with a Springfield bolt made in 1954 and GI wood. Really love the gun.

If you want one get in line brother.

Mechanos, thanx for posting. Any word on carbines or 1911s?

Everyone: It is a great program . The 1903 and 1917 if available are great platforms on which to work up a good hunting rifle... and if 270 Win (long range), 30-06 or 35 Whelen (woods/brush)won’t do the job... shoot it twice.

They will not be sold cheap, CMP funding comes in a large part from rifle sales.

Vets should have no problem getting one if they want one.

All interested folks should download the application NOW and start filling it out. You also need to get one page notarized, be a member of an affiliated club, and submit dd214, or CCW, or other proof of firearms training. If I were to start today, it would take me 3 weeks.

Do it now!

I’d PAY someone to remove Cosmoline ... I did one and it was like the never ending song, it just goes on and on and it never ends.
(Even snuck it in the Oven once and got chewed out, I was getting desperate, hope that isn’t why the wife left me)

Yeah, but at the end you had nothing but clean and pristine metal. The Philippines’ climate is rough on anything with iron content.

I’d PAY someone to remove Cosmoline

Our entire recruit battalion got brand new Garands issued at P.I. Boot Camp back in the day.

We took the cosmoline off in a drum of boiling hot water.
Then running water, soap and scrub brushes.

I did one at home with a bucket of gasoline.

Both methods worked fine.

Saw the armorers in VN, they took the M1’s out of the boxes unwrap from the greased paper then placed in a 55gal drum of boiling water. Kept them in there for I don’t how long.
They then broke them one by one for a complete drying, lubed up and they were good to go to the ARVAN

With these rifles being 70years old, make sure you get an armory reconditioned one with a new barrel.

Otherwise you won’t want it.
