Dem wants hearing after United passenger dragged off flight

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is calling for a hearing the forceful removal of a United Airlines passenger from an overbooked flight.

“I deplore the violent removal of a passenger from a United Airlines flight this weekend,” Norton said in a statement Monday. “Airline passengers must have protections against such abusive treatment.

"I am asking our committee for a hearing, which will allow us to question airport police, United Airlines personnel, and airport officials, among others, about whether appropriate procedures were in place in Chicago and are in place across the United States when passengers are asked to leave a flight,” she continued.

Norton’s remarks come after a viral video surfaced showing the passenger being dragged out of his seat and down the aisle by three airport security guards after refusing to give up his seat.

ADVERTISEMENT United Airlines reportedly offered $800 to individuals who would voluntarily give up their seat, but not enough people offered. The airline then decided to choose individuals at random.

“The only information available has been that perhaps $800 was offered to leave the flight. Federal rules require airlines to give passengers four times their fare or up to $1,250 if they are bumped from an overbooked flight,” Norton said.

Why continue to overbook a flight

The flight was not overbooked. United decided to put 4 employees on that flight and removed 4 paying passengers in order to accommodate them.

She can't vote, so who cares what she thinks? She just wants a platform to be relevant.

No one seems to realize the $400 offer is CREDIT for another fright on their own airline. Its not $400 or $800 in cash. I would refuse too. Its not a good deal.

Anyway, why are the FEDs involved?

The guy freaked out, so what. He doesn’t look like the confrontational type. He looks like a real weak nerd. Hardly a need to man handle him.

Even if you hate Asians, from a business point of view, this is a nightmare! And its the wrong way to do business. Forget wrong or right. This is just stupid on the part of the airline.

I guess they won’t be over booked anymore.

The arsehole should be charged with a felony for interfering with a flight crew.

Bumping people because of overbooking happens hundreds of times a day...The difference in this case, a hysterical drug addled drama queen

They should have tazed him early on before all the yentas on the flight got their panties in a wad and their iphones out.

Extra stupid on them. Great way to do business. Anger your customers.

If I was the one tasked as the cop to remove the big baby Moron, I would have announced to all other passengers by speaker explaining the situation that the plane is not moving anywhere until all passengers are assigned seats cuz of FAA regs and law.

Tic toc the jet stays put ...tic toc tic toc The other replacement crew is going to be late meaning the plane at O’hare stays grounded and leaves late or a cancelled flight. And I would have videoed the whole dang scene , and got the captain of the jet on film ordering the guy to also disembark.

How long do you think the other passengers would have put up with this and turned on this clown to leave, or some other passenger volunteered to take his place? I bet it would not have taken long as the scene went on as the passengers would turned on him, and BOR O’Reilly Fox wouldn’t have his lead news story of the day on for the 8 o’clock news.

My post at #48 is how to take care of this situation in this judgement by Youtube society. Any UA’s bad business practices would not be a concern.

If the Democrats are calling for a hearing on behalf of this passenger, then you are going to have to excuse me from the jury because now I know he must have done something wrong.

Good idea. That would be the best way of handling the situation. It would take less than 5 minutes until the chants started up to remove the POS.

A friendly, bidding war among passengers to free up seats voluntarily, would have resolved this. This whole thing was a huge horrific mess, no matter how you cut it. Airline industry is becoming a thug arm of TSA..... Who the heck to they think they are physically assaulting a paying passenger who has taken his seat!?

Because some tickets are refundable, which means the people can simply not show up. And others which are not refundable are still rebookable, for a small fee, and sometimes people show up too late to get to their flights.

So in exchange for slightly cheaper airfare, we all deal with the possibility that we will be bumped. And generally, the money offered is good enough to fix the problem.

Thing is DOT regs say that a ticket is not a contract so that’s how airlines get around that overbooking thing. But to me it’s still fraud to sell the same seat several times.

I agree. Everybody has a price. Any amount given for volunteers would be worth it compared to the losses they are incurring now.

They always (and Republicans too!) do this! Remember the wardrobe “malfunction” at the Super Bowl? They’ve been doing this sort of thing for decades if not years. Anything to avoid handling the people’s business!!

Trump get’s it!

Furthermore, the big baby is looking for a big payday. A big motive in our overly suing nation.

Especially when he found out he couldn’t fly out until 3pm the next day. I’d call BS too. They should’ve handled this prior to boarding. Now they’ll pay, as they should, for this bad PR move. I bet the crew that got on to fly to the next destination heard some comments directed their way.
