My understanding is that he’s not a formal member of the NSC, but still has security clearances and will attend any damn meeting President Trump wants him to attend.

That was also my take from the start. Bannon's membership was vital until Flynn was replaced. Now that McMaster has officially replaced Flynn, Bannon does not need the extra responsibility of NSC membership. And as he demonstrated today, Bannon can sit in as needed.

I have a suspicion that Trump may have wanted to project a “I am moderating or even leaning liberal” image for the last week to help with the effort to nuke the filibuster. If the rinos thought Trump is “coming around” it might have helped. Getting the Nuke option was no small feat. There are at least 6 notorious rinos who I thought would block it.

IIUC.....He was not REMOVED. He said, in his own words yesterday, that he exited the committee on his own because he’d completed his specific mission: Smoke out who’d been surveiling the Trump Transition Team and who’d been leaking names. DONE!
