They probably would have never gotten shingles if there was never a chicken pox vaccine. It was being exposed to chicken pox later in life that prevented people from getting shingles.
Since, none of their children or grandchildren get chicken pox anymore...... Surprise, now they have shingles.

After having chicken pox, the virus lays dormant in the nerve roots until it is reactivated at a later age. So more people getting chicken pox as kids would lead to fewer cases of shingles later in life because there would be more people with the virus lying dormant in their nerves waiting to be reactivated?
