FBI director can be fired, but only one (William Sessions) has ever been fired - and that was after months of allegations about bribes, etc..
Certainly any firing will be highly political, so there would need to be a long and focused campaign against a sitting FBI director before even attempting to do so.
Sessions was fired by Bill Clinton, who along with Chelsea Clinton’s Father, Janet Reno, appointed Louis Freeh as FBI Director.
