Without the comedic element and the entertainment value.
A friend from college was a halffast actor. He was involved in small town theater. Ted Knight was in town for a small town production of some thing or another. My college friend was given the job of making sure he got a room, got food, got what he needed to be comfortable.
He said Knight was Baxter. Total A-hole without a sense of humor and just 100% full of himself.
So my take on Knight was he was funny in spite of himself. Like when Groucho Marx said that his perennial movie foil, Margaret Dumont, did NOT get the jokes but she made for a funny performance.
No excuse for Matthews at all though.
