An uncle of mine, a former police chief, says a shotgun is the best for home defense because it’s rounds have a shorter killing range.

The world has changed since old days. Please educate yourself. See link above to Box o Truth.

An AR15 would not be my first choice for a home defense weapon in an urban or suburban environment. I’d go for a 12 gauge shotgun or a handgun chambered for a round that will get the job done w/o a high risk of over-penetration.

An AR-15 _IS_ my first choice for home defense in a suburban environment. Overpenetration? Look at the link above, and compare for yourself. Box o Truth.

Shotgun is the way to go according to a former cop friend of mine. Better chance of hitting your target in a stressful situation and no chance of shooting through your house walls and hitting an unintended target beyond.

Please educate yourself, people. Shotgun is not a magical force field you don't have to aim. At inside-the-home distances, the pattern is no bigger than your face. Please read the Box o Truth link above.

That’s unusual. Usually there are some wounded and maybe a death. Looks like I’m gonna be getting an AR-15.

Good decision. Yes, 80% of people in America shot with a pistol survive. Not so a rifle. The muzzle energy is just tremendous. AR-15 is a great choice for home defense. And that's not me saying it-- it's world-class trainers like Massad Ayoob, Paul Carlson, etc.

...their investigation remains open.

Desperately seeking grounds to prosecute, no doubt. Can't have citizens successfully defending themselves!

That's right.

But you know, I think this particular translation of this verse:

But he replied, “It is enough!”

... is pacifist and changes the meaning of the next subtly. These translators were trying to make Jesus, "Gee wilikers, um, it's nice that you have a sword, but let's stop talking about this, because, um, violence makes me nervous." Let's remember: our Lord kicked butt in the Temple, righteously wielding the whip and kicking over tables. Jesus was no simpering lily, He was and is the Lion of Judah.

I too would use a properly set up AR15 as well, easier for a followup shot, especially of multiple targets. At best for most shotguns is 8 rounds. Unless you have something exotic.

My argument is this, how fast can you rack an 870 while being chased in the dark half asleep? A light, a laser, short barrel carbine setup, plus close quarters training. Hopefully its truly justified and not a drug deal gone sour.

My question is what would be the best round to use in the AR-15 for home defense?

Charl van Wyk (pronounced “Sharl Van Veek”) knows of what he speaks: he defended a 1200-member church in South Africa, using only a .38-spl revolver, against multiple AK-47-wielding Communist terrorists.

...

I looked that up and it appears to be a case of attackers being scared away by a potential victim fighting back with a firearm. Usually any firearm will do and people should remember that before thinking they have to buy a canon for defense.

Christ actually answered your question in a parable:

Mat 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Luk 12:39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

In both cases those “nots” are absolute negations. And Christ isn’t condemning the “goodman of the house” (homeowner) for not permitting the thief to commit his crime. Instead, He’s speaking of this crime prevention approvingly.

If it is at night, in your house, or they out number you... Any one of those are grounds to shoot regardless of their armed state. All three? Your only thoughts should be trigger pull. Order them to the ground? There are three. If the one off to the side pulls a gun you did not notice you will be dead (and soon your family) before you even know it. Yelling orders is for movies and for cops. You would not believe how fast someone with a knife can get to you from across the room. It is MUCH MUCH less than a second. Three of them and you hesitate to shoot? We will all pity what happened to your family after that.

Like to see what a 7.62x39 would do.

I agree it can be read that way but I don't(read it that way). I read it as Jesus' exasperation with His apostles failure to understand what he was saying to them, what it meant for their immediate future and that time was getting very short.

I've read several translations and I think they all can be interpreted with a pacifist bent and very few pickup on the virile Jesus instructing His apostles to prepare for battle be it spiritual, physical or both.

I think this falls under the first rule of fight club... "Don't talk about fight club!" which I am breaking by the way.

He had a .38-Special revolver, because that was the only firearm listed on his carry permit (very restrictive South Africa). The question I was answering wasn’t AR-15 vs. revolver, it was the earlier question about whether self-defense is Christian or not. van Wyk is a committed non-Catholic Christian.

Top trainers vary on this, but I have heard frangible rounds, soft-hollow-point hunting rounds (that's what I load), and specialized copper defense rounds. Anything but full-metal jacket, but frangible has the least overpenetration. Frangible is not as effective on perps with thick clothing (coats) though.
