Hollywood makes crappy movies.
Most are remakes/retreads.
No one wants to spend $15 for a movie ticket.
No one wants to spend $12 for a small coke and small popcorn that cost the theater 75 cents to make.
No one wants to spend 20 minutes plus sitting through commercials and promos before the movie even starts.
No one wants to watch a movie that is 80% CGI, has crappy acting and no plot.

the problem is that the executives are making the movies that shareholders and liberal insiders want to make.
Not the films that THE PEOPLE want to see, with rare exceptions American Sniper etc.

Don’t forget this important fact: going to the movies these days is not fun.
between people talking, kicking seats, ‘ youts ‘, yelling, endless numbers of people on their phone texting - it’s just not an enjoyable experience.
Most of the films I go to see have been in the theater awhile and involve either older actors or the subject is history. Audience is pretty well behaved.

What you said + the convenience'/comfort factor of waiting to see a film at home. Why fight traffic, parking and overpay for snacks AND worry about nutcases sitting around you? People are rude, talk on cellphones, talk out loud and then there's the increasing chance of REAL dangerous people in there with you! Film to DVD has killed the theatres, just as internet shopping has made comfort and convenience the deciding factor on where to spend your time and money.
Then there's the dreck factor of most films. If it's gonna stink, better to spend $12 on a DVD than $$$ taking the family to a theatre.

By this point most of Hollywood's money shouldn't be coming from theaters but from television, DVD, and streaming.
If they're just counting on cinema receipts they won't be in business much longer.

I can think of only a few exceptions, but there are some.
One outfit is run by the Coen Brothers. Their last two films have were brilliant and I think reveal a lot about their setting: Washington, in Burn After Reading, and Hollywood during the Cold War in “Hail Ceaser.” See them if you haven’t already.
