Your synopsis is EXACTLY why there is very little rock music out there these days. Me thinks young men aren’t allowed to show their angst, therefore no rocking riffs.
So it's better for them just to keep from commenting on their political views or keep it low key. I do respect those like Nugent, Simmons and Lydon who speak out anyways, but remember that they are on the tail end of their careers. They already made their mark in the industry so they are not risking as much as an up and comer.
John Lydon always had good smarts. The Sex Pistols hit the scene at just the right time and while their behavior was outrageous, a lot of it was calculated to generate the publicity they needed to put themselves at the forefront of the punk movement. They paved the way for much more talented folks like The Clash, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and Blondie, etc. The punk movement morphed into New Wave and it really shook up the rock and roll scene, which artistically speaking, was getting sort of dull.
“Im partial to Careering.
X2
Roger Waters (or someone from Pink Floyd) has been quoted as saying that he learned after the heyday of punk rock that the Sex Pistols loved everything Pink Floyd did.
Rockers like Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes and others like them are highly talented musicians, no matter what Johnny Rotten thought about them and their concept shows and albums.
