United Airlines bars teenage girls in leggings from flight

Two teenage girls wearing leggings were barred from boarding a United Airlines flight on Sunday because they did not meet a dress code for special pass travelers, a company spokesman said amid a furor on social media.

The two girls, who were traveling with a companion, would not have been turned away for wearing leggings had they been paying customers, United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said as the airline responded to the backlash.

"(The two girls) were instructed that they couldn't board until they corrected their outfit. They were fine with it and completely understood," Guerin said, adding that all three passengers missed the flight. He did not know if they had boarded a later plane or made alternate travel arrangements.

Though the three passengers did not complain about their treatment, another traveler, Shannon Watts, who overheard the discussion touched off a firestorm on social media with a series of tweets describing a policy she suggested was unfairly targeting women and girls.

Oh, so it’s a busybody. Bet she’ll hound the “victims” into joining her crusade.

And she’s saying it targets females? More like, trashy females.

My problem with this is that they would let them be trashy if they paid, but apparently trashiness is not allowed if you got a guest pass?

Hey, if they want to wear a ‘rape-me’ sign....

Not really. This spandex stuff is ubiquitous now. Jeans are going the way of the dodo bird for females.

My dad worked for United and the only time we dressed up was for vacation travel. They have a very strict dress code.

My brother wore his suit on the plane one vacation and forgot his other clothes. Dad refused to pay Hawaiian prices for anything other than swim trunks and he wore those for two weeks rain or shine. We got one meal a day at Perry Boys Smorgy. Great times.

Do you know they sell “camel-toe” undies?

They are similar to the padded undies that enlarge the butt for a Kardashian look.

Saw them online the other day while searching for girly things; sometimes I hate the internet!

Silly you.

Sunday best is now trousers and polo.

And worse is perfectly acceptable!

Nope, we don’t even get “dressed” for church.

I thought leggings were to be used as a substitute for long underwear. That’s how I use mine — UNDER my slacks, or jeans, on those ‘below zero’ days we get in the mid-west! And I’m slim and trim.

Where they are NOT to be used is part of an ensemble for a Eucharistic Minister distributing Communion at church. (I’ve seen that.)

Even though it is on a plane, it would be the same as if one were to meet a friend for lunch at the company cafeteria.

When going to someone's workplace, one must dress appropriately for the workplace. A company pass on an airplane is still a trip to the workplace for the free traveler, who is representing the judgement of the employee who gave the pass.

This is absolute bullcrap.

These girls were traveling gratis, on United's dime. There are a dress code, they knew it, they ignored it, and they did not get to board. Get over it, snowflakes. When you sign a contract and then don't fulfill your end of it, you get NOTHING.

They did not complain.

A busy-body neighbor complained.

And turns out she is a professional busy-body whiner.

When ever I flew non rev, I knew the rules. I always went the extra mile to look sharp, and it generally resulted in an upgrade to an empty first class seat !

Winning :)

I refuse to join the slobs of the world. I always at least wear dress slacks and a long-sleeved shirt to church, even in summer. During cooler months I add a blazer and tie. The only time I wear shorts is when I'm around the house. Shorts are for kids.

“I always went the extra mile to look sharp, and it generally resulted in an upgrade to an empty first class seat!

Me, too! I had an awesome winter white wool suit I’d wear when checking in at the counter (not the gate) before a flight. My lucky suit — always got upgraded! Even flying from AK to HI, I’d put on that WOOL suit. It was hot when I got there, but so worth it to be in first class for 6 hours. I’m not sure, but I don’t think the airlines are as flexible with those kinds of things as they were pre-9/11.

Exactly. I worked for an airline when I was (much) younger. If you flew non-rev (free), you were required to dress in business attire.

Job didn’t pay much, but I wish I had a dollar for every free airmile I flew. Great times.
