Trump taps Kushner to lead a SWAT team to fix government with business ideas
Washington Post ^ | March 27, 2017 | Ashley Parker, Philip Rucker

Posted on 03/26/2017 11:22:01 PM PDT by Pinkbell

President Trump plans to unveil a new White House office on Monday with sweeping authority to overhaul the federal bureaucracy and fulfill key campaign promises — such as reforming care for veterans and fighting opioid addiction — by harvesting ideas from the business world and, potentially, privatizing some government functions. The White House Office of American Innovation, to be led by Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, will operate as its own nimble power center within the West Wing and will report directly to Trump.

Viewed internally as a SWAT team of strategic consultants, the office will be staffed by former business executives and is designed to infuse fresh thinking into Washington, float above the daily political grind and create a lasting legacy for a president still searching for signature achievements.

Kushner is positioning the new office as “an offensive team” — an aggressive, nonideological ideas factory capable of attracting top talent from both inside and outside of government, and serving as a conduit with the business, philanthropic and academic communities.

“We should have excellence in government,” Kushner said Sunday in an interview in his West Wing office. “The government should be run like a great American company. Our hope is that we can achieve successes and efficiencies for our customers, who are the citizens.”

The innovation office has a particular focus on technology and data, and it is working with such titans as Apple chief executive Tim Cook, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff and Tesla founder and chief executive Elon Musk. The group has already hosted sessions with more than 100 such leaders and government officials.

It is important to remember the context of the comparisons of business and government.

President Trump made an exceptionally strong effort to meet with the CEO’s of American businesses, lots of them. The reason was not to tell them what he was going to do but to listen to what they thought needed fixing.

Jared Kushner has been tasked with part of the job. He will have a volunteer force to provide assistance in developing business methods to be applied to government. People here resent his youth and wealth and then their knee jerks and the bitter criticism pours out.

I prefer streamlined and run like a business.

Government isn't a business

Government is a Government.

If we only had an owners manual for it...

All these billionaires are much better at solving problems

Some billionaires or successful people in the private sector have skills that do not translate into useful skills in the public sector. The names of Robert McNamara and Herbert Hoover come immediately to mind. On the other hand, some captains of industry like Henry J Kaiser were very effective in mobilizing America's industry for war. But of course in times of war money is not the object and opposition is steamrolled in the name of survival. Not so in the sausage making business of cooking up legislation in peacetime.

Reform of government is terribly difficult, ask Al Gore, because the people who operate government are not interested in generating a profit but are interested in cultivating votes or growing turf. The public too often is not interested in government efficiency but in a government largess. In short, there is almost no constituency for leaner, more effective, more economical government.

We see liberal Democrats being put in the role of breaking Rice bowls, let us give them the benefit of the doubt and credit them with good intentions but they are about to learn how tenacious the owners of those rice bowls will be in their defense.

If Jared Kushner cut the size of the Government by 50%, I'd carve his face in Mt. Rushmore myself.

Sounds like just another name for the Jarrett-CZARS of the previous administration.

Team Trump still needs to do a house-cleaning of the Executive branch — soon. The enemy is still within.

“While your skepticism has been well-earned by the professional political class which preceded him, Trump has spent his first two months doing nothing but keeping campaign promises. Until and unless he changes that, he has my confidence.”

This ^^^^^ I can’t believe what in the hell is going on with some members here on Free Republic. I have seen nothing yet in Trump that causes me not to have full confidence in the man.

Great question. I thought Trump said Newt would have a role in his administration. Methinks Newt's perfect role would be mentoring Trump and his staff on working a bill through Congress.

Then some one needs to EDUCATE Kushner on Opioids stats. Most are fake. Most OD’s are Heroin laced with Fentanyl, real or home made.

What is being hidden is the 1.33 Million Chronic Pain Patients committing Suicide because the DEA and the FAKE stats the media is putting out are being cut off of pain meds by 75%. Imagine you are 70+ yrs old, have a incurable disease that causes massive pain. You are now forced into FAKE Pain Management and have to P in a cup every 30 days with a $300 co-pay, because your Specialist is afraid to script for your well medically documented medical condition and pain.

What are you talking about? He and the GOPe/RINOs he colluded with proposed just a reworked version of Obamacare as “repeal”. That was working with the (conservative) Republicans? Truth be told, Trump repeatedly spit in our (the deplorables/his base) by telling him that another version of Obamacare was “repeal” and “great” and if our reps didn’t back it he would primary them with obedient GOPe/RINO candidates.

That is what just happened. No reason for us to lie to ourselves or others about the situation.

9yearlurker,

Lyin’ Ryan put it together on the sly & tried to push it thru in the dead of night.

It’s Lyin Ryan’s bill, not President Trump’s.

Sorry, but it was largely Trump’s Secretary Price’s bad bill—he’d been shaping it as part of the Ryan/GOPe/RINO gang in Congress for years. And it was introduced into Congress with Trump’s blessing and full support. The RINOs and Democrats in Trump’s inner circle were all for the bill and the dishonest sales job of it.

What Lyin’ Ryan did was to mislead Trump on whether it was a slam-dunk to get through Congress. And yes, Trump walked into Ryan’s trap on that.

We —do— have an owner’s manual.

The Constitution.

The powers not delegated to the feds are reserved to the States and the people.

‘The people’ in this case (streamlining portions of the present govt structure & running those portions like a business) are the businesspeople & companies to whom President Trump is talking.

10th Amendment!!!
