ATLANTA (AP) Americans who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act are feeling some relief at the failure of Republican efforts to repeal it, but they face new anxieties with President Donald Trump tweeting that ObamaCare will explode.
Premiums have risen and major insurers have backed out of the state markets where people can buy insurance online under Obamas signature health care law. But people who say it saved their lives or helped them start a business want lawmakers to fix these problems, not encourage them.
It does need its fixes, I totally see that, said Inge Hafkemeyer, 57, who credits the laws subsidies for containing her costs as her home-based event-planning business took off in Mission, Kansas, a Kansas City suburb. But if your roof leaks, you dont burn down the house to fix it.
Clare Schexnyder, 49, is convinced shes alive today because of it. As a small business owner in Decatur, Georgia, she couldnt afford health insurance until the rollout in 2013. She began getting mammograms, and her breast cancer was spotted in time. Her double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery was priced at $250,000, but she paid no more than her $6,200 annual deductible.
Then, her daughter spent a week in the hospital after her appendix burst, costing them another $6,200. They took out a second mortgage to pay the bills.
An appendectomy shouldnt have to make me refinance my house, she said. Its still not a perfect system by any means, but Im glad we have it.
Schexnyders insurer pulled out of the Affordable Care Act last year, leaving fewer alternatives in Georgia, one of the states that refused to set up insurance exchanges or participate in Medicaid expansion.

feeling some relief at the failure of Republican efforts to repeal it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The efforts to repeal it were all before Trump got into office.
Ryancare was not repeal, not even close.
You can always find a few people who are desperately grateful for some abominable political monstrosity.
But is is Constitutional?
But is it sustainable?
But is it contributing to a relentless rise in costs?
But it is hurting the vast majority of Americans?
I don’t care about anecdotes about people who “need” Obamacare.
And once again Trump is correct
I think the correct term is “implode” not explode.
Nicely said and can be applied to almost any issue.
Yes, of course it will explode. It was intended to. Obama’s overall mission was to destroy as much of the the economy and capitalism as he could to push America toward total collapse. Hillary was to win the presidency and complete the job, and then usher in international communism.
Out of nowhere insurance was responsible for paying $250,000. I don’t the premium payments over time ever put that kind of money out.
Massively disabled and elderly should get some help, the rest need to deal with what life brings you.
Really? Your daughters life isn't worth refinancing your house? How sad.
Just out of curiosity, does the author mention how old the daughter is?
Sheeeeyit. I’m facing a 2,000 dollar penalty here in a couple of weeks for not even having health insurance. So I’m paying for something that I’m not even being treated for. Stupid woman.
Maybe not.
Talk to your accountant. Apparently the IRS is not verifying coverage this year under one of Trump's first directives as President.
Really??? Thanks for the heads up.
Trump and the Freedom Caucus should push for input from medical doctors and conservative think tank economists, not the John Kerry economist Paul Ryan tapped for info to "FIX" Obamacare.
Obamacare is a bag of crap. And the only thing you can do with a bag of crap is FLUSH IT.
Actually, Obamacare comes as close as anything to doing just that.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a Federal health care law that was designed to fail is actually going to fail. LOL.
These fools don’t get it. Every time a government creates something, it later needs to be “ fixed.” They should be told,”you can’t fix stupid.”
And when it explodes, it will lead to fully socialized single payer medicine.
It was meant to be by design. The left acknowledges that what it did was take affordable health insurance from working people, charged whites more while giving them crappy plans, and gave highly "subsidized" insurance to blacks and Hispanics.
I am still waiting for the freedom caucus bill. Anybody see it?
They pat their backs on the failure of this bill, yet they havent put forth a bill in its stead. WHERE IS IT?
Definitely check with your accountant on this, but I'm about 85% sure that this is the case for 2016 tax returns.
