Iraq suspends Mosul offensive after coalition airstrike atrocity

Iraqi military leaders have halted their push to recapture west Mosul from Islamic State as international outrage grew over the civilian toll from airstrikes that killed at least 150 people in a single district of the city.

The attack on the Mosul Jadida neighbourhood is thought to have been one of the deadliest bombing raids for civilians since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Rescuers were still pulling bodies from the rubble on Saturday, more than a week after the bombs landed, when the US-led coalition confirmed that its aircraft had targeted Isis fighters in the area.

They carried out the attack on 17 March “at the request of the Iraqi security forces”, and have now launched a formal investigation into reports of civilian casualties, the coalition said.

Any culture and/or society that cannot wage war effectively is most certainly doomed.

75 years ago we would have use the aircraft to drop leaflets, and then walked a wall of artillery across the city...and back.

the firebombing of Dresden during World War II produced 300,000 dead, more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.

150 is NOTHING.

Arabs go shooting their mouths off about their extreme contempt for death, how they LOVE death, then we see this.

This is totally ridiculous.

put up or shut up.

Tokyo 1945?

Sucks living under maniacal madmen who turn your homeland into a war zone.

This has been going on since the counter campaign against ISIS started. Did anyone see pics of Ramadi after the US bombing finally drove ISIS out? It is levelled like Hiroshima, far worse than any city in Syria.

The media is simply reporting civilian casualites of “coalition”(ie 99% US) airstrikes now becuase a Republican is president. There is no doubt that thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed by airstrikes under Obama and not a peep from the media about a single one.

War is hell.

If you make a mistake, you eat it and move on. You don’t quit. You don’t listen to “international pressure”. You say “sorry Charlie”, and you move on and do your best to avoid another mistake.

We firebombed the crap out of Dresden. We dropped Nukes on Japanese cities. Tragically, and with a flood of tears from the Lord our God, civilians die in wars.

Want to minimize civilian death from wars? Kick your enemies ass and END THE WAR.

ISIS regularly murders civilians in the most barbaric ways possible, and does so intentionally. Where is their apology? Admittedly, it is paradoxical to kill people in the process of liberating them, but their fate would have been worse if ISIS survives.

And this was an accident, one of the uncertainties of war. It is regrettable, but not as regrettable as letting a bunch of bearded savages continue to roam free and set civilization back 1,000 years.

300,000 is a propaganda figure and no way near accurate. Newest figures by German commission indicate 25,000.

You beat me to it. Imagine the alternate headline, “Allies suspend war in Europe over Hamburg and Dresden firebombings.”

He warned that the deaths, and other recent attacks in Syria that have claimed dozens of lives, risked turning public sentiment against the coalition. “We have until recently always credited the coalition for taking care to avoid civilian casualties, compared with the Russians. But since the last months of 2016 you have seen this steep climb in civilian casualties and public sentiment has turned very sharply against the US-led coalition.”

are these people bat spit crazy ?

ok. you win.
We'll escort ISIS back into Mosul. Have a nice day.

Iraq? They wouldn’t give a ####. Must be getting pressure from the west to hold off a few days.

Either that or this article is satire “atrocities”

I don’t think i’ve read that word once when describing the slaughter of Christians.

Are they kidding?

I understand SOP of Islamists is to keep civilians near military targets and then exaggerate the resulting deaths. Any loss of life is tragic, but war is hell. Civilians know their chances are slim and none, but are trapped, they are a ransom to hold off Islamic defeat. Islamists are masters of deceit and evil.
