There were many American women who married Iranians and found them to be very different once they returned to Iran with their husbands. We had many consular cases dealing with American wives trying to bring their children out of the country after a divorce or separation. It was very difficult if not impossible. And wives to get their husband’s permission to travel. Even under the Shah, there were religious taboos.

He wanted me to wear a burka and you can imagine back in that day I had no idea what a burka was and , well I just refused.

About eight years later, I was married and had my first child. The Iranian hostage crisis became a big deal and I pondered where I would have been had I married that guy.

He was very handsome though. If that matters.

And he made yogurt, using cheesecloth in his kitchen sink.

Just a silly memory.

Then Jimmy Carter....worst president ever.
