I have never understood why people think it will collapse.
It's in the process of collapsing already. More and more providers dropping out of markets every month. Higher premiums and higher deductibles forcing people to go bare and just pay the penalties. Covering pre-existing conditions and covering every non-taxpaying illegal that makes it across the border pretty much assured a death spiral for obamacare unless ever increasing subsidies are provided to insurers and stiffer penalties for refuseniks are enacted - but with Trump in the White House and both houses of Congress in Republican hands those things don't have to be provided.
Doing nothing and watching it burn the whole time pointing at the Democrats and saying, "See what those bastards did!" should be the Republican plan of action - not trying to fix the Democrats mistakes and thereby taking a share in blame for the coming disaster.

Yes, insurance companies will drop out - but those that remain will work with the supportive State Governments and their exchanges to screw middle class buyers with higher rates. You mentioned "unless ever increasing subsidies" - and that is EXACTLY what will happen. I assure you - there is NO DEATH SPIRAL. Obamacare is perverse, expensive, and destructive, but it will continue by the power of the Federal Government.
