Synlight: Germany fires up 'world's largest artificial sun' in push for climate-friendly energy

Scientists in Germany have flipped the switch on what is being described as "the world's largest artificial sun," a device they hope will help shed light on new ways of making climate-friendly fuels.

The giant honeycomb-like setup of 149 spotlights — officially known as "Synlight" — in Juelich, about 30 kilometres west of Cologne, uses xenon short-arc lamps normally found in cinemas to simulate natural sunlight that's often in short supply in Germany at this time of year.

By focusing the entire array on a single 20-by-20 centimetre spot, scientists from the German Aerospace Centre, or DLR, will be able to produce the equivalent of 10,000 times the amount of solar radiation that would normally shine on the same surface.

This artificial island could soon power 6 countries

Danish firm Energinet.dk is already working with the German and Dutch branches of energy firm TenneT to build the island.

So you are using electricity to generate light which becomes heat so you can turn that back into electricity. 2nd Law of Thermodynamics still applies.

"Many consider hydrogen to be the fuel of the future because it produces no carbon emissions when burned, meaning it does not add to global warming."

Hydrogen combustion produces water vapor, which is a more effective greenhouse gas than CO2. But leave the global warming fanatics their illusions.

Water vapor can easily be filtered at emission.

An ‘artificial sun’ is, by definition, a nuclear fusion reactor. That’s not what this is.

Hydrogen is a storage device, much like a battery.

There are no hydrogen mines, it has to be produced (at a great energy cost) and compressed into a liquid for storage. Transporting hydrogen by truck requires an expenditure of energy equalling a large percentage of the cargo’s energy.

Hydrogen is a scam.

That ain’t no artificial sun. It’s a big energy suck that produces light. No new technology here.

The sun produces its light as a by product of nuclear fusion

Never mind that in order to be in usable form, hydrogen must be released from whatever molecule it is covalently bonded to, and that it takes at least as much energy to break those bonds as is returned by burning the hydrogen to reform bonds later on.

Those little physics based drawbacks of hydrogen usage are the reason that the hydrogen fuel cell fad of the 90s never really caught on (except briefly among those who don’t understand physics).

We all miss the point that those smarter than us are on the brink of producing the perpetual energy machine. Just a few more government grants and they’ll work out the kinks.

Ya see a fusion reactor would make an artificial sun. That would solve the energy issues for good.

The second most effective clean power source would be a well designed (designed for safety) fission reactor.

The goal is to eventually use actual sunlight rather than the artificial light produced at the Juelich experiment, which cost nearly $5 million to build and requires as much electricity in four hours as a four-person household would use in a year.

Yeah, that looks like a winning recipe for generating electricity. Not.

Even if they could use mirrors or prisms to focus sunlight onto a small area, I think it would cause all kinds of problems for the local ecology. Birds would be confused by the shiny surfaces, with what could be lethal results as they either crash into the array or fly into extremely hot air pockets.

I prefer schemes such as the attempt to use algae to collect sunlight. I don't think giant pools of algae would be nearly as bad for the environment as some of the other "green energy" schemes have turned out to be.

This remarkable system extracts tax-payer dollars from the government and stores it in off shore accounts until the moment that it needs to suddenly disappear!
