Dems may be ready to deal on Gorsuch
American Thinker ^ | 03/23/2017 | Rick Moran

Democrats may be ready to throw in the towel in opposing the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to be associate justice of the Supreme Court.  According to Politico, several sources are reporting that a group of Democrat senators may be willing to allow the Gorsuch confirmation to go through on the Senate floor in exchange for a pledge from Republicans not to get rid of the filibuster.  Their thinking is that if President Trump has another opportunity to name a Supreme Court justice, they want the option of blocking any nominee.

Another vacancy would be far more consequential, as it would determine the balance of power between liberals and conservatives on the court.

If Democrats move ahead with the plan – it's still in the early discussion phase – it would require buy-in from some Republicans, but not necessarily Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) or his top deputies. At least three rank-and-file GOP members would have to pledge not to vote to unilaterally change the Senate rules through a majority-only vote later in Trump's term – the so-called nuclear option.

Cobbling together a group of senators from opposing parties to take such a stand would be difficult, given the long-running partisan war over confirming judges and pressure from the left to deny Gorsuch confirmation. But some Democrats are worried enough about the Senate losing its unique minority rights that they've begun kicking the tires on the potential for a new bipartisan "gang."

The current talks are limited to about a half-dozen Democratic lawmakers. They haven't made an offer to Republicans yet, and Democratic leaders wouldn't support one.

Democrats familiar with the effort requested anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter that divides the caucus.

No deal.

Of course, with McConnell in charge he’ll probably leap at any opportunity to self inflict any and all wounds.

No deals, no quarter. 60 votes is not required by the Constitution and we all know that when Rats are in power, they ALWAYS get the votes from GOPe for whatever nutjob commie they nominate. Therefore loosing the filibuster does no harm to us, and gains us everything.

McConnell will fall all over himself to take the bait. The result being, Trump won’t have any more options to appoint conservatives to the court.

Sigh.

It is reported Gorsuch said gay marriage is settled law. He will be another O’Connor in my fearful opinion.

I think he said that gay marriage is Supreme Court precedent. He didn’t say it couldn’t be overturned, just standard legalese that precedent is subject to some deference. I would say the same thing, then vote to overturn a really bad, unlawful precedent.

But Chuck Schumer has gotten behind the idea of filibustering the nomination.

Let the Democrats filibuster, but they hare going to have to get up and TALK, not just bluff as they have done in the past. After two or three weeks, the Democrats shall have all talked themselves hoarse, and wandered far from the subject at hand. At which time, if the cloture vote cannot be secured, then allow the vote to proceed, and if Neil Gorsuch does not clear that hurdle, use the nuclear option, blowing up the filibuster rule once and for all. Next stop, majority vote only on all votes before the Senate, with only those exceptions spelled out in the Constitution.

My prediction.....

1.) McCain, Graham and Collins are the three stooges who agree to this.

2.) Trump is forced to nominate a moderate (see liberal) for his next appointment in order to avoid a filibuster.

3.) Gorsuch turns out to be another Kennedy.

4.) The court is now fully and permanently a bastion of unfettered liberalism.

In the end, the dumb ass Republicans took the White House, the HOR and the Senate and subsequently destroyed the country. Mark my words.

"So, what do we do, Chuck?"

"Mitch, Mitch...it's easy! I start by saying I'm gonna filibuster, then later on put out the word I'll make a deal! You let us pick the next nominee when there's an opening, and we're good!"

"That works, Chuck! You're the best!"

No. That’s the point. McCain, Graham and Collins will first need to PROMISE to never use the nuclear option. Then the Dems won’t fillibuster Gorsuch.

Now, we all know that these three would have no problem lying to voters or conservative activists but there is no way in hell they would EVER lie to Democrats.

A deal isn’t necessary to confirm Gorsuch. Tell the Rats to pound sand.
