Immigration provision cut from Obamacare rollback, angering conservatives

Some conservatives in Washington were fuming on Tuesday after an Obamacare rollback bill was tweaked by Republican leaders to delete a provision meant to crack down on illegal immigrants getting federal healthcare insurance coverage.

The development posed another problem for Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives and President Donald Trump, who are trying to win congressional approval of the wider bill, the first big legislative test for Trump since taking office.

The provision would have allowed the Treasury Department to access data at the Department of Homeland Security to verify that healthcare tax credits went only to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents, not to illegal immigrants.

In a largely procedural move, it was dropped from the bill after the Senate Parliamentarian determined that the Senate Finance Committee, which handles tax credits under the bill, does not have purview over the Department of Homeland Security.

Republican Representative Lou Barletta issued a statement on Monday evening, after the change was made, saying he could no longer support the bill, citing the obscure provision.

If Obamacare collapses and they haven’t repealed and replaced as promised, it’s their fault. They own whatever happens.

It won’t collapse. The GOP will just keep shoveling payola subsidies to the “insurance” industry to mask the real issues.

Why would the Dems want to get in the way of the GOP committing suicide?

I doubt you could find a freeper who would say positive things about Gorelick.

Thus, I am surprised that some are giving Ivanka and Jared a pass on this disaster.

No, Ryan meant for that to happen.

Trump is making a BIG mistake by staking his future on Ryan. Ryan is not to be trusted, too egotistical, and also inept.

If this fails, and it looks like it very well might, Trump will have a hard time recovering. The people will say that not being a career politician means that he doesn't know how to get things done in DC.

“The people will say that not being a career politician means that he doesn’t know how to get things done in DC. “

There is no evidence to the contrary. Can’t get noms through, can’t get EOs that pass judicial review (I know, not fair...but it won’t matter to the meme), and can’t get any of his legislation through a REPUBLICAN Congress.

Strap in. It’s going to be tough times.

Utterly Useless.

That is the most accurate description of the GOP “leadership” in Washington.

the Senate bill must be crafted so as to not be subject to reconciliation. It must require 60 votes, and must be written to provoke a filibuster.

hold on now - if the parliamentarian thingy says no can do to Ryan’s hairbrained idea to datalink Revenue and Homeland, we just find a better way to skin the cat.

The illegals that go on healthcare are probably going to do the same thing they do now - go on medi-aid/welfare. That puts the burden on the state (who is now going to administer the lion’s share of medi-aid) to verify. And if they refuse to verify citizenship at enrollment, the IRS bills the state for any credit issued. No extra agencies, no fuss, no muss.

We’re going to have a whole lot less illegals shortly, so let’s not sweat the small stuff.

Trumpcare “Bucket” 2 will get bogged down in the courts and bucket 3 will never happen. We are being played. Again. How stupid do they think we are?

I suspect it's not going to unfold this way.

Rush Limbaugh had an interesting take on this today, and I'm starting to think he's right about it. Whatever 'Bucket 1" bill the Republicans come up with is never going to pass: either vulnerable Republicans won't support it because it's never going to reduce premiums for anyone, or conservative Republicans won't support it because it keeps 95% of Obamacare intact.

So maybe the best approach is to cram everything from Buckets 1, 2 and 3 into a single bill -- and let the Democrats vote it down in the Senate. Bring it up for a vote whenever the 2018 premium notices start going out, and then bring it up again for a vote every other week until the 2018 elections.

This is giving me a headache. When they can say they have earnestly prayed for Wisdom and God’s direction in this matter, then I’ll buy their decisions. God has all the answers. . .these clowns don’t get it.

Wrong. Anyone who follows this knows the Pubs could use the nuclear option. The other 95% of the public just knows the Republicans are in charge, and whatever happens is on them. If they lose coverage, or the cost goes up for them, they won't care about details, they will blame the Republicans, and Trump in particular. And rightly so. They have the power and promised "repeal and replace". More than that Trump promised a "great plan" and that "everybody will be taken care of". If they don't deliver they will get the blame for whatever happens.

that’s the same logic that I normally use as well.
Trump’s the wild card and it’s hard to imagine him losing.

This thing will not pass the house and I think the president knows it and wants it to fail. Sure, he’ll get an earful from us, but the person who will get hammered the most will be Ryan, and I think that’s what the president is hoping for. A defeat of this bill is egg in the faces of Ryan and the GOP leadership.
