In 1961, the year Obama was born, Kenya was still a British protectorate. Technically the sovereign was the Sultan of Zanzibar and not Queen Elizabeth II. However, it is unlikely that the British would have repatriated the Kenyan records upon the nation becoming independent in 1963. They did not retain or take other former colonies’ records, including those from the future United States.
