Lets hope reality sobers Erdogan's intent. The World needs a break from brutal wars.
A lot has shifted in Turkey in the last few years. Much of what fueled Erdogan’s rise has reversed.
The booming economy has gone bust. There are nascent signs of brain drain and capital flight.
The peaceful foreign policy has become a violent mess. Turkish soldiers have recently start coming home in coffins from Syria, the country is inundated with 4 million refugees, near civil war has erupted with the Kurds, and terrorist attacks have spiked. There was even serious threat of war with Russia last year.
The moderate mask has been removed, for all to see. Turkey is becoming a world class police state, Erdogan has built himself the world’s largest palace, and power is being centralized even more than under Attaturk.
It remains to be seen, if it is too late for anything to stop dictatorship in Turkey, short of Erdogan’s death.
Time to carve that Turkey. One has to wonder though how being the Syrian gun runner for the US Deep State during the Obama Clinton years has affected Erdogan.
Let’s get down to hard tacks. Kemal gave the army the right to intervene in political affairs. He then banned anyone who went to a religious school from becoming an officer to guarantee the army would be secular and use their power to promote secularism. Erdogan went to a madras so after he was drafted he could never be an officer no matter how hard he tried.
Erdogan and people like him know that each generation of Turks coming up is more Muslim than the one before. He knows time is on his side. Once he waits for the current generals to die of old age the only obstacle to a full Muslim takeover of Turkey is gone. This is his real plan. Its all about the army.
