Multnomah County offers incentives for homeowners to house homeless in backyards
OregonLive.com ^ | March 16, 2017 | Molly Harbarger

With more than $300,000 and volunteer homeowners, Multnomah County has a new idea to fight homelessness: Build tiny houses in people's backyards and rent them out to families with children now living on the street.

The homeowners would pay nothing for the construction. They would become landlords and maintain the units for homeless families for five years.

Then the tiny houses would become theirs to do with what they want. If the homeowners break the contract before then, they pay the cost of construction.

The project would put the 8-month-old joint homeless office - a shared effort between the county and Portland -- in the housing business while offering an innovative, if so far small-scale, way to chip away at Portland's affordable housing shortage.

Four tiny houses are tentatively scheduled to launch this June at $75,000 apiece, with the hope for up to 300 accessory dwelling units as they're known in the next year if the first ones work out.

Homeowners won’t have to drive to the garbage dump anymore, it’ll be right there in their backyard.

This is the same mentality that put jogging trails and bicycle paths through our neighborhoods to give muggers and rapists easy access to a whole new world of prey.

Like the Burke-Gilman Trail in Seattle; goes right through people’s back yards; homeless camping right off of it practically in people’s backyards..

And are those properties now permanently re-zoned for multi-family living?

With corresponding property tax increases from added value AND conversion from single family residential to commercial income-producing property.

And then there is the income tax to be paid on the value of the structure.

Like every other libtard idea there is never any though given to unintended consequences.

I am all for tiny houses in a back yard for extra income. But there is no way in hell city planners would allow it. BUT since the city wants to do it everything is A OK. And the property owners chosen are all going to have deep ties to local officials if not they use their own property. After 5 years they will kick out the homeless family, get a ‘free’ 70k upgrade their property, and then rent it out for $1100 a month.

If Opir parked a trailer in my back yard and rented it out I would be fined and thrown in jail.

"Oregon is almost as insane as California."

Oregon is working hard to surpass California. Portland's "political demonstrations" are a non-stop street theater. I'm going to a pro-Trump rally in Vancouver, across the river in Washington. The antifas will use 3" diameter wooden dowels as "flag staffs for their banners". (Yes, they like to swing these 'flag staffs' "in self defense.")

We cannot shoot the effing sh!ts, yet, even in self defense. Portland actually provides police protection for demonstrators. We are curious to see if the Vancouver PD feels the same. they don't answer to the Socialist mayor of portland, but they do have to bow to the democrat mayor of the 'Couv. Portlandia is a documentary...

This is apparently based upon the belief that if you give a homeless man a home, he’ll stop behaving in the ways that made him homeless in the first place.

I was hoping I could move into your backyard in a little house :)

You can throw me scraps each night and in five years you’ll have a free 75k house :)

And my wife gets a five year break :)

Anybody that takes that deal is incredibly, incredibly ignorant.

101 & 405 freeway near Los Angeles is Sepulvada Dam, Balboa park.
Last weekend I was walking a dirt trail that has a bridge that goes over a creek that leads thru to another bridge that goes over the creek a short distance away. The area shows random human habitat from the seat cushions, sleeping bags, discarded clothes etc, when I come across 2 guys talking and chopping down the small trees in the area.

I cannot see them because they built a large tent that must have been 20ft long (don’t know how deep) a few yards inside from the path. This is a very public park with lots of people. Not too many use that path because of the danger. No one can see what is going on because of the trees and brush. Family park up-ended by bums and politicians (same).

This took a couple days of thinking:

Is Portland, Oregon ready to change all of their single dwellings into multi-family dwellings? Maybe yes, because they then could charge all Portlanders more in tax money. That is if I am correct. And if so, it will be the homeowners who will be footing the bill for each 75,000 dollar structure. Then, the cost of other city services would rise to cover any possible deficits.

Probably what they really want is the home-owners to become responsible for the care of the mentally-ill, drug-addicted and disease-ridden. Out of sight out of mind.

Who in their right mind would let their children play in the backyard with squatters who the city cannot guarantee are not pedophiles?
