Standing at Brookhaven National Lab, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today revealed that the just-released White House budget decimates the ?nations national labs, including BNL, a world-renowned lab responsible for innovation, research and nearly 3,000 LI jobs. Schumer sounded the alarm and expressed serious concerns over a proposal to cut $900 million from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, which funds national laboratories, like Brookhaven, and $2 billion from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), the nuclear energy office, the energy reliability office, as well as the fossil energy research office.

LOL, Now that’s using your head. Money is not everything.
If Schumer is unhappy about this than it’s undoubtedly the “right thing” to do.
When ordinary Americans find prices going up beyond our budgets, we have to change our spending habits, or get a second job. Why should agencies and organizations do any less. There’s only so much money to go around. Of course, liberals have a great plan. Tax everyone up to 80%, put everyone on the dole, cradle to grave. (Might need to put a limit on spending and lifespans of old people, tho). We could all live in public housing, be given food allowances (I could lose a few pounds, anyway), and let the government (democrat ruled, of course) run all commerce, and everything else. What could go wrong? Oh, wait...haven’t several countries tried that system already, and found it’s not all it’s cracked up to be? I think it’s called communism...
Well, it’s very old. It was old when I visited there in the 1970’s in my grad student days. I can’t make any judgement as to its current viabilty, although I would think it might be a unique resource.
OTOH, its primary mission has passed it by, I feel sure.
Chuck Schumer: He’s a Friend of Hyperbole, and enemy of Veracity.
Will the budget reduction reduce the amount of time spent watching porn?
Oak Ridge, Los Alamos
The primary mission of tandem was to feed RHIC. Tandem I know is running, and NASA uses RHIC, as well as various physics people.
It would be nice to know what else they do at Brookhaven.
As I understand it CERN does primarily high energy particle physics. Brookhaven I believe did participate in the analysis of the Higgs boson data produced by CERN. Our labs still have some of the best computational facilities even though we can’t produce data at those energies. We foolishly ceded that field to the Europeans when we canceled SSC.
I doubt if the “core work” of Brookhaven we be that harmed by anything Trump does. Getting it back to what its supposed to do and out of “pop science” like climate modeling would be good for the place.
I agree!
“Nuclear bomb makers. Got enough.”
They’re not, and we don’t.
Congratulations.
They do have a nice campus and congenial atmosphere for science at WVU
