The irony here is just too much. The NY Times accused President Bush of spying on Americans in 2003 and were proven wrong. Yet, in 2016, we may have President Obama doing exactly that and the evidence for it provided by the very same NY Times. In Jan 2017, their front page said:

You forget that the President CAN'T reveal "evidence" that reveals classified information or clandestine sources and methods. What Trump CAN do is continue to quote the media back at them, which is what he's doing, with absolute confidence in his assessment, while he lets the investigation proceed.

So they thought they had him in a pincer - they KNOW he has the evidence, and they ALSO KNOW he can't say what it is.

I don't trust most career politicians.... I don't care if they have an "R" after their name or not.

Trump's an outsider, and as such he's hated/feared by everyone in the establishment... most of those people have a lot to lose if he succeeds in breaking the corrupt system.
